Wesley Berry

August 13, 1925 — April 11, 2020

Wesley Edmund Berry, 94, of Willistown, PA, formerly of East Norwich, NY, passed away April 11, 2020.

Born August 13, 1925, in Manhattan, NY, he was a son of the late Herbert Mead and Mary Theresa (nee Brennfleck). He grew up in Peekskill, NY, the third of four brothers being raised by a widowed mother during the depression.  He served honorably as an officer of infantry in the U.S. Marine Corps.

He was the beloved husband of the late Audrey (nee Spengeman) Berry; loving father of David W. Berry (Sandra) and Doug Berry (Margaret); adoring grandfather of Audrey Berry; and dear brother of Raymond Berry (Anita). He was predeceased by his brothers Herbert and Norman.

Mr. Berry attended various universities, including Furman University, the University of Nebraska, Bucknell University, New York University, and Hofstra University, from which he earned bachelor and master degrees in history, political science, and education.

Mr. Berry taught at Oyster Bay High School in Oyster Bay, NY, for 30 years until he retired as Chairman of the Social Studies Department in 1990.  After retirement, he then went onto a second career serving the needs of retired Teachers as an Executive Member of the New York State Retired Teachers Association (NYSRTA), where he, along with his wife Audrey, organized many functions, not only to lobby for Teacher’s needs and concerns, but to provide a social outlet for retired Teachers in their later lives.

After the death of his beloved wife, Audrey, in 2009, Mr. Berry moved to Willistown, PA, to live with his son, David, and his daughter-in-law, Sandra.  For the rest of his life, Mr. Berry enjoyed an active life, attending various social functions where he made many friends in a new part of the country.

Interment will be private at Calverton National Cemetery on Long Island. A public Memorial Service will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Wesley's memory to the Semper Fi Fund (semperfifund.org), a charity started by Marines that helps all American veterans in need.
