Warren Powell

Warren V. Powell, 96, of Glen Mills, PA, and former longtime resident of Bethesda, MD, passed away May 11, 2020.

Born June 27, 1923 in Cantril, Iowa, he was a son of the late Ernest Clyde and Effie Bell (nee Kirkhart) Powell. He served honorably in the U.S. Navy during World War II, and later in the Commissioned Corps of the U.S. Public Health Service with NIH, attaining the rank of Captain.

Mr. Powell received his Master's in Public Health from the University of Michigan, and enjoyed a long successful career working at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), where he eventually served as Chief of the Biological Control Section, Environmental Safety Branch, Division of Research Services. Some of his work included control of infectious diseases similar to COVID-19, which contributed to his passing. He will be interred at Arlington National Cemetery alongside his wife Willie Mae.

As a young man, he was a starting point guard, despite being on the shorter side. His character was tall in stature in every aspect of his life. Mr. Powell enjoyed his grandkids, great-grandkids, hard candy, reading, classical music, fishing, traveling, and adventure, even homesteading with his wife and daughter in Alaska prior to its statehood in 1959. He and Willie Mae also owned and preserved 40+ acres in southern Calvert County, MD, as part of the American Tree Farm System. Born poor just prior to The Great Depression, he was taught by those who helped him, to help others. And he did, all his life.

He was the beloved husband of the late Willie Mae (nee Moore) Powell; loving father of Patricia Ann Powell (Dennis) Hunsecker; adoring grandfather of Matthew Warren Hunsecker, Andrew Lee (Jordan) Hunsecker, and Samantha Ann (Philip) Koehler; and caring great-grandfather of Stasha Hunsecker; Maxton, Dean, and Tessa Hunsecker; and Penelope Koehler. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his siblings: Paul, Geneva, Wayne, Kathryn, and Mary.
