Jayne B. Dickinson, 95, of Newtown Square, PA, passed away February 16, 2021.
Born April 20, 1925 in Philadelphia, PA, she was a daughter of the late Thomas Nelson and Kathryn M. (nee Stehr) Beattie. A lifelong Philadelphia resident (she was a huge fan of the Phillies), the only time she lived outside of Philadelphia was when her family moved to Paris, where she attended kindergarten. She loved to tell the story of the sea voyage to Europe- but never traveled by airplane in her entire life! Following her marriage to Haines Dickinson in 1956, she left the workforce to devote her time to her family, especially her beloved boys.
She loved being active. She played golf (on the golf team at Old York Road Country Club) with at least two holes in one (she would giggle as she told that story, as Haines had none). Once Haines retired and the boys were off on their own, she played golf and tennis with her life partner. They were morning fixtures on their bikes on the Ocean City Board walk in the mornings and kayaking in the afternoons. Together they drove across the US several times visiting friends. Jayne had a flare for house decoration and gardening and filled a portion of that retirement time with designing beautiful home settings. Once finished, she would urge Haines to sell that condo and they would move on for her to do it again – in Florida, in South Carolina, and at Ocean City, NJ.
As they grew older, they moved their permanent residence to Whitehorse Village in Newtown Square, PA, where Jayne remained active- participating in many community activities and committees. When the bocce court at Whitehorse was built in view of Jayne’s back patio, she learned that game as well.
She loved people and being with friends, bringing joy to many with her infectious laugh and was always ready “to have some fun.” Jayne loved her retirement years with Haines; they were known to finish each other’s sentences. Upon losing Haines in 2010, she demonstrated her resilience, and continued to express the joy she found in her community at Whitehorse and her family.
Jayne was the beloved wife and soulmate of the late W. Haines Dickinson, Jr.; devoted mother of Thomas H. Dickinson, M.D. (Jane Carter, M.D.) and Robert B. Dickinson (Susie); and adoring grandmother of Mark Dickinson (Lindsay Root) and Greg Dickinson.
