Elinor Gebremedhin of Berwyn, beloved mother of Daniel, Teshome, Ruth, Maleda and Hassab Gebremedhin, sister of Charles Pedersen and Barbara Shapiro, and grandmother of three, died peacefully on Tuesday, July 28 at the age of 81. She exuded energy, life, creativity and compassion throughout her life and was cherished by all those she was close to. Her spirit, life and work will be deeply missed and will be celebrated by a virtual service on August 22nd at 4 p.m.
Elinor was born in New York, New York to Olga and Charles Pedersen and grew up on Long Island. She attended Ohio Wesleyan University for her bachelor’s degree, majoring in music, and went on to do graduate work at the University of Wisconsin in Madison in preparation for joining the Peace Corps. She spent several years in Ethiopia teaching English and there met Kifle Gebremedhin, whom she married and returned with to the United States to start her family. She lived in the Philadelphia area until her death, working as a computer analyst and editor, actively engaged in playing clarinet and recorder in local ensembles, and helping with the music programs at the Wayne Central Baptist Church, in addition to raising her large family. She used her skills teaching English to help local non-English speakers as a volunteer.
