Alva Smith

March 9, 1930 — July 15, 2020

Alva Buford Smith, age 90, of Audubon, PA, passed away on July 15, 2020.   Born in Kentucky, he was the son of the late Harry and Eva Smith (nee Caldwell).

Buford was a spirited man, great husband, father, grandfather, caregiver, and enjoyed a lifelong friendship and loyalty to those closest to him. He had a "presence", which was apparent whenever he entered the room. Some would say that he lit up the room. What people remember most is his tremendous and endless sense of humor.  He was a true jokester, loved making people laugh and pulling pranks.

Buford was an athlete.  He approached life with a strong competitive attitude. This was evident in most things that he did, especially in sports, which was a big part of his life.  He was known on the basketball court, tennis court and spent hours every day during the season water walking in the pool at Martins Dam.  He was an avid consumer of sports programming, particularly Major League Baseball and NBA games.

He was proud of his yard, its health and appearance. What many would consider yard work, was a passion and an outlet for him.  He delighted when neighbors would stop, chat and tell him the yard looked like a park.

He also enjoyed traveling. Although rarely initiated, he seemed to always enjoy travel and traveled throughout Europe and the Caribbean.

Born and raised in Northern Kentucky, after graduating from University of Cincinnati, he worked for Schenley Industries.  In 1967, he worked for New York Central Railroad in Transportation moving the family to Westchester County, NY.  A few years later he was promoted to Director of Intermodal with Conrail relocating the family to Strafford, PA.

Married just shy of 68 years to Janet, they had two children Greg and Claudia.  After decades of living in Manhattan, Greg now lives in Barcelona, Spain with his wife Maria and son Brooks, daughter Emily lives in NY.  Claudia lives in Maryland with her husband David, dog and cat.

He was the best dad, we will miss him terribly.  Our hearts are filled with wonderful loving memories.
