William Joseph Wysong

April 12, 1947 — July 6, 2025

It is with great sadness that we acknowledge the passing of our beloved father, grandfather, brother and friend, William Francis Joseph Wysong.

Bill was born on April 12, 1947, in Dayton, Ohio, to Woodrow and Kathleen (O’Neill) Wysong, but lived most of his life in Philadelphia, and later in Collingdale, PA. He attended St. James Roman Catholic Elementary School and West Philadelphia Catholic Boys’ High School. He was a military veteran, who served in the U.S. Army from 1967 to 1969, and earned a Purple Heart. He worked for 42 years at the University of Pennsylvania, a community he grew to treasure in his native West Philadelphia.

He is survived by his sons, Matthew Altman (Katherine Meade) and Andrew William, and their mother, Marybeth Altman Wysong, and by his grandchildren, Winston, Penelope, and Vivian. He was predeceased by his companion, Vanessa McArdle. He is also survived by his sister Anne, brother James (Eden Braun), and sister Monica (Linda Ziman).

Bill was an avid sports enthusiast, always cheering on his favorite college teams. He coached youth baseball for the Fairmount Sports Association, and he volunteered at a local youth baseball club in Collingdale, PA.

By those who knew and loved him, Bill was described as more than a gentleman, but a “gentle man.” He loved his family and friends, his home marked by many photos of those dear to him, especially his grandchildren. He will be remembered as a great communicator, who always had time to talk about any subject with curiosity and enthusiasm.

A memorial celebration of life for Bill is pending. Instead of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to your favorite charity in memory of William Wysong.
