Emblem

William Levering Serrill, Bill, peacefully passed away on August 14, 2025 after courageously facing and succumbing to the effects of dementia. He was surrounded by his loving family. He was a kind, earnest, supportive, trusting, and loving man with a keen wit and a dry sense of humor throughout his life until the very end.

Bill was born in Washington, D.C. on November 18, 1945 to Joseph Lewis and Barbara Levering Serrill and was raised with his younger brother, Ed, in Wyncote, Pennsylvania. He graduated from George School in Newtown, Pennsylvania in 1963 and from Lafayette College in 1969 with a Bachelor’s degree in Economics. He was a member of the Delta Upsilon Fraternity at Lafayette and was also in the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) for the U.S. Army.

While briefly attending York College, prior to Lafayette, he serendipitously met Martha Ann Hannum, who became the love of his life. Bill and Martie Serrill were married on April 26, 1969. Shortly after, they relocated to Fort Hood, Texas to enter into the U.S. Army. During their time in the Army, Bill was promoted to 1st Lieutenant and was appointed to Aide-de-Camp for Major General Desobry. Martie also had the unique opportunity to assist the general’s wife in her numerous and fanciful social events and obligations. After two years, Bill was honorably discharged in 1971.

Following the Army, he earned a Master’s degree in Finance at St. Joseph’s University while working for Mobil Oil. He transitioned to his second and final career as a Financial Advisor for Wells Fargo Advisors which he enjoyed immensely for over 30 years. Along with his integrity and commitment to his clients, he was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend.

Bill was an avid traveler, enjoyed collecting antiques, woodworking, playing billiards, and most of all loved sailing. From a very young age, he developed a love for sailing and boating that he pursued his entire life. He had the delight of finding his dream boat, Manitou, that he, Martie, and their family, sailed for over 17 years throughout the Chesapeake Bay nearly every weekend of each summer. He cherished the many dear friendships with fellow Chesapeake sailors they developed during their time on the water.

Bill is survived by his wife, Martie, of 56 years, his children, Allison (husband, Doug), and Doug (wife, Melissa), his grandchildren, Maddie and Ashley, and his brother, Ed (wife, Barbara). He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
