William F. Mahoney

Jan 24, 1935 — Oct 10, 2026

William F. Mahoney, 91, died peacefully at his home in West Chester, Pennsylvania on October 10, 2026. He was surrounded by his children and grandchildren, who meant the world to him.

Born in Joliet, Illinois on January 24, 1935, Bill was the beloved son of Cletus and Mildred (Ochs) Mahoney and sister Joann Norris, who all preceded him in death. After serving briefly in the U.S. Army, he studied journalism at Marquette University and spent a lifetime honing his craft in both corporate and personal pursuits. He spent 20 years as editor of Investor Relations Update, published by the National Investor Relations Institute, founded Shareholder Value Magazine and was cofounder and editor of Valuation Issues newsletter. He wrote four books on investor relations and corporate governance. His corporate communications career included positions with Motorola, Unocal, Scott Paper, Esmark, Young & Rubicam and Chemetron, as well as work as a consultant. He began his career as a reporter for the Ft. Wayne News-Sentinel in Ft. Wayne, Indiana. After retiring from corporate writing, Bill took great satisfaction in writing stories about his life, his beloved Chicago Cubs and the world around him.

While at Marquette, Bill met his wife, Carroll (Johnson) Mahoney, a fellow journalism major. Bill and Carroll had five children, Erin (David) Alderfer, Kevin (Katherine) Mahoney, Megan Mahoney, Sheila (Michael) Startup and Nora (Mark) Petchkofski. Favorite family activities included summers at Lake Ripley in Cambridge, Wisconsin and endless hours in parks and on all kinds of adventures. Carroll preceded him in death in 1998.

Aside from his family, Bill’s greatest passion in life was sports. He was devoted to all Chicago sports teams but especially the Cubs. A walking encyclopedia of stats, plays and Cubs trivia, his World Series dream finally came true in 2016. His children learned early on how to keep a scorecard and took batting practice with a wiffle ball from the time they could walk.

In addition to sports, Bill loved music, especially jazz, and was an avid reader. Nothing gave him more pleasure in recent years than taking in his grandchildren’s activities, from baseball, basketball, softball, volleyball and hockey, to plays, concerts and recitals. His grandchildren, Dan, Chris, Shannon, Catherine, Cecelia and Ava, will miss him immensely.

Bill will be greatly missed by others as well, especially his long-time friends Deb and Caroline, and many nieces and nephews. He was also preceded in death by his second wife, Indira Doobay. Throughout his life, Bill exemplified gratitude, love and generosity beyond compare. His love and dedication to family and those he cared for was unsurpassed.
