Beloved mother, wife and grandmother Violet Flounders Long was called to the Lord on August 1, 2018 surrounded by the love of her family and friends, as she was in life. Born on December 27, 1955 to the late Emer and Violet van Zuylen Flounders in Drexel Hill, Pennsylvania. Violet is survived by her husband of 42 years, Jeffrey Long, Sr. and their two sons, Jeffrey Long, Jr. and John Long, her two grandchildren Jeffrey Long, III and Madison Long, five siblings, Mia Brower (Richard), Sarah Kramer (Michael), Charlotte Flounders (Paul Napier), Emer Flounders (Janina), Bill Flounders (Claudia Smukler), and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Growing up in Drexel Hill, Violet attended and graduated from Country Day School of the Sacred Heart before meeting her husband and attended West Chester University. Initially settling down in Havertown and raising their two sons and later moved to West Chester. As a child, Violet loved animals (a volunteer at the Philadelphia Zoo), swimming and horseback riding. Violet was the former director of Neurodiagnostic testing and sleep diagnostic testing at Bryn Mawr Hospital and at Crozer Chester Medical Center. She performed electroencephalograms (EEGs), electromyograms (EMG), electrophysiologic studies (EPS), and served as Director of the educational Neurodiagnostic Technology Program at Crozer Chester. More recently, she worked at the DuPont de Nemours Hospital for Children where she performed Neurodiagnostic testing in a pediatric environment. She was a longtime member of the National Organization of Neurodiagnostic Testing Educators where she served as an Examiner.
Violet lived with a smile on her face and a zeal for adventure, her summers were spent at the beach from a young age, and she carried on the tradition with her husband, children and grandchildren. When she wasn't enjoying her time at the shore, Violet could be found on camping trips with her family and she was never far from her dogs. An animal lover and lover of books, she could be found most any night, whether home or away, reading with her husband and at least one puppy by her side.
Her greatest joys in life were her two grandchildren, she looked forward to planning activities and excursions during their time together and was always having as much fun as they were. Violet's devotion for children extended past raising her own family. She dedicated much of her career in the Neurodiagnostic field focusing on children with epilepsy and was able to calm even the most anxious child, or parent, through often strenuous tests with her peaceful nature and genuine compassion for others.
Violet touched the lives of so many and will have an everlasting impression on the hearts of those that knew and loved her. "When we are gone, and people weep for us and grieve, let it be because we touched their lives with beauty and simplicity. Let it not be said that life was good to us, but rather, that we were good to life". Violet was indeed good to life.
Visitation with the family will be at 9:30 am on Thursday, August 9, 2018 at the Donohue Funeral Home, 1627 West Chester Pike, West Chester, PA 19382, 610-431-9000 with a memorial service to follow at 11:00 am.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Violet's name to the Nemours Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children.
