Thomas Moody Mayo, Jr.

Thomas “Tommy” Moody Mayo Jr. was born in Chuckatuck, VA on December 14, 1929, and died on December 16, 2023, in West Chester PA.

He was raised and lived in Newport News, VA.

Tommy had a great 46-year career as an electrical engineer at the Newport News Shipyard. An insatiable reader, he often referred to himself as a "storehouse of useless knowledge".  Fishing was his passion, he would say "I would fish in a bucket of water if he had to".

He was a real Southern gentleman and served honorably in the US Army. His music interest was in the big band sound of the Dorsey Brothers and Glen Miller and would take every opportunity to go to a ballroom dance hall on Saturday night. He loved eating and was fond of his wife, Tanis's cooking. They raised their only child Suzi to become a dedicated Christian and a loving mom to their grandsons Chris and Robby.

Tommy was an all-in grandfather, teaching them the art of fishing and going to all their childhood activities. Most of all Tommy had a deep faith and always said "I will be with the Almighty someday" and everyone he met knew it too.

He leaves behind his wife of 70 years Tanis Lascola Mayo; his daughter Suzanne Morris Burke; and his grandson Robert Morris and his wife Emily, all of the Philadelphia area.

Relatives and friends are invited to his Visitation 1:30-2:00 PM Thursday, December 28, 2023 at the Donohue Funeral Home, 1627 West Chester Pike, West Chester, PA immediately followed by his funeral service 2:00 PM.  Interment will be private in Newport News, VA.
