Susan E. Gast

Susan E. Gast (nee Smith), 77, of West Chester, PA, passed away at home on August 23, 2026.

Born in New Haven, CT in 1949, she was the daughter of the late Stuart A. and Barbara (nee Dowman) Smith.

Susan was the beloved wife of Michael J. Gast, MD, PhD; loving mother of Margaret E. Goodwin (Ken), Zachary A. Gast (Kate Tempest), and Sarah A. Gast; caring grandmother of Ryan Goodwin, Andrew Goodwin, Emily Goodwin, Layla Gast-Tempest, Colin Gast-Tempest, Keira Gast, and Isabelle Gast; dear sister of Patricia Briggs, Beverly Egbert, the late Virginia Burgers, and the late Stuart Smith, Jr.

Susan attended Glenbrook North High School in Northbrook, Illinois and has maintained friendships with many of her classmates over the years. After graduating from the University of Illinois, Susan completed a Master's degree in Health Policy and Planning at the Ohio State University. She spent the early years of her career as a leader in Maternal and Child Health policy and implementation in St. Louis and the surrounding area.

Following her retirement from health planning work, Susan devoted her life to family, raising three beautiful children and lavishing her love on seven wonderful grandchildren. She was a wonderful wife, caring and attentive mother and cherished grandmother.

Susan's interests outside of her family time included local politics, church activities and social life with her circle of close friends. She was a talented chef, always cooking and serving her family and friends with love along with those meals.

She will be missed more than she would ever know.
