Stephen Karl Winterode

Stephen Karl Winterode, age 54, of Springfield, PA, sadly passed away on December 3, 2024.

Born in Media, PA, he was the son of Barbara (née Fortune) Winterode and the late Albert Winterode, Jr. (Susan.)

Stephen, nicknamed “Boo” was a lovable soul who possessed a jolly personality and a special heart. Stephen greeted everyone with either his trademark “shake my hand” followed by a bone rattling handshake, or a big, warm hug. If you were really lucky he would poke you on the shoulder while laughing joyously. Stephen took great enjoyment in listening to the Beach Boys, watching Rocky movies, playing table hockey, and calling people names – especially his family. He later developed a passion for bingo, especially spinning the wheel and calling out the numbers. 

Stephen also loved attending Sunday School with his friends at the Aldan Union Church and spending one week every summer at Camp Sancanak. Stephen’s strength and resilience were a source of great inspiration for his family. Despite his many physical and developmental challenges, Stephen never complained. He loved his family and he was the center of their world. While his happy disposition and loving nature will be greatly missed, his family takes solace in the recognition that Stephen is reunited in heaven with his Dad.

Stephen attended various schools as a young child. He was a long-time member of the Don Guanella family, beginning with his middle school years. While living at home, Stephen attended the DCIU school program at Don Guanella School from middle school to graduation at age 21. Beginning in 2007, Stephen became a resident of Don Guanella, living at various campuses, the latest being the Immaculate Heart of Mary (IHM) House in Springfield, PA.

Stephen is survived by his loving mother, Barbara Winterode; his caring sister, Colette Holzer (Ralph Jr.) and his devoted brother, Michael Winterode (Erin Mashintonio). He is also survived by his kindhearted step-mother, Susan Winterode, as well as his dear niece, Deanna Irving (Marcellus) and his great-nephews, Cameron Irving and Cooper Irving.

Relatives and friends are invited to gather to honor Stephen at his Visitation, Saturday, December 7, 2024, 10:00 to 11:00 AM at the Divine Providence Village Chapel, 686 Old Marple Road, Springfield, PA 19064, followed by his Funeral Mass at 11:00. Interment thereafter at Birmingham Lafayette Cemetery, West Chester, PA.
