Robert “Bob” Oliver, 72, of Wayne, Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully on October 13, 2026. He was the beloved and devoted husband of Karan Abdalla-Oliver, with whom he shared 23 years of marriage. In his final hours at Lankenau Hospital, Bob was surrounded by a dozen family members, including his son, Tyler, who traveled from Colorado.
Born on March 23, 1954, Bob was a man of great stature and a kind, gentle heart. His friendly smile was his trademark, and he had a gift for making everyone he met feel like a friend.
One of seven children of Lee and Peg Oliver, Bob lost both parents while he was still in high school. He remained part of a close family spanning three generations and numbering more than 50 people, to whom he was affectionately known as “Uncle Bob.”
His son and pride and joy, Tyler Oliver, 31, is a U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter pilot, stationed in Colorado, who recently returned from 11 months of service to our country in the Middle East.
A 1977 graduate of Drexel University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business, Bob spent his entire career with Oliver Fire Protection and Security, founded by his father, Lee Oliver, in the 1950’s. He specialized in the sales and installation of fire protection and security systems for major Philadelphia hospital buildings, including those of Penn Medicine, Temple and Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. He had been their “man of the year” in 2006. In 2022, he was honored by the Subcontractors Association of the Delaware Valley, whose scholarships now bear the name “The Robert Oliver Scholarship Awards.”
His generosity is legendary as was his status as a “superfan” for the Flyers, Phillies and Eagles. Tailgating was a professional pursuit, as was the sharing of their season tickets. He set records for buying rounds of drinks and providing astounding gratuities for service people.
Bob loved speed, whether in cars, snowmobiles, or high speed racing boats. A national and world champion offshore powerboat racer with Team Firewater, he brought an adventurous spirit to life while remaining gentle and welcoming to those around him. Because of he and his wife’s passion of German shepherds, he also supported charities dedicated to the care and respectful treatment of animals. To say there is a legion of people who will miss “Big Bob” is an understatement.
In addition to his wife, Karan, and son, Tyler, Bob is survived by his six siblings: Peggy Moore and her husband, Ed Sorenson; Nancy Roach and her husband, Chip; Bill Oliver and his wife, Donna; Dick Oliver and his wife, Chris; Bonnie Wettersten and her husband, Reid; and Deb Hornsleth and her husband, Paul. He also leaves a large extended family who will remember his kindness, his smile and the friendship he offered so freely.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Main Line Animal Rescue (www.pspca.org) or Home of the Sparrow (www.homeofthesparrow.org).
Family and friends are invited to Bob’s Visitations from 4:00-6:00 PM on Friday, October 30th and from 9:30 AM – 12:30 PM on Saturday, October 31st both at The Donohue Funeral Home, 366W Lancaster Ave, Wayne, PA 19087.
