Richard Jack Eckel of Haverford PA died peacefully at home surrounded by his family on August 23, 2025 at the age of 82 following a fall. Born in Camden NJ, Richard was preceded in death by his father (Harry), mother (Eleanor), sister (Elaine), and brother (Harry, Jr). He is survived by his wife, Maureen Gervase Eckel; his three children Kyle Eckel, Erika Turner (Thomas), and Kevin Eckel; six grandchildren Veronica Fresta, Victoria Eckel-Fresta, Thomas Turner, Gabriella Turner, Leo Eckel, and Bianca Eckel; four great grandchildren Stella Ayling, Joseph Ayling, Pierce Ray, and Summer Ray; several nieces and nephews.

Raised in Camden NJ, Richard was an accomplished athlete, who passed his love for sports to his children along with his strong support of the Eagles and the Phillies. Cars, particularly Corvettes, motorcycles, all genres of music, and gardening were among his many interests. He loved to be at the Jersey shore standing at the water’s edge guarding his children and grandchildren as they played in the ocean and enjoyed a raspberry ice cone at Springers in Stone Harbor.

Richard was graduated from Rowan University with a BS and MS in Environmental Science. His graduate research included the migratory patterns of Northern diamondback terrapin turtles in southern NJ. Richard loved to be outdoors and had a great interest in the environment. He enjoyed sharing his love and knowledge of science with the students he taught for 25 years at Haddon Heights High School. Richard also spent 20 summers at Camp Arrowhead teaching boating and boating safety. Prior to be becoming a teacher, he had worked as a printer for Chilton Publishers for over 20 years. Richard proudly served in the NJ Army National Guard for 13 years.

Richard will be remembered as a loving and patient husband, father, and grandfather, and as a dedicated teacher.
