Philip G. Duffy, age 91, of West Chester, PA, was called to be with his Heavenly Father for eternity on June 20, 2026.
Phil is survived by his beloved wife of over 67 years, Marilyn; son Sean M. Duffy and wife Mary Spiers; son Kevin P. Duffy; daughter Erin D. Cassel and husband Mark A. Cassel; grandson Austin M. Cassel and wife Riley M. Cassel; grandson Spencer E. Cassel; sister-in-law Eileen Peter Calzadilla; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Phil is predeceased by his parents, Ernest G. Duffy and Jeannette Carlberg Sullivan; sister Lucille Duffy Galasso and husband Louis Anthony Galasso; brother-in-law Alfredo Angel Calzadilla.
Phil was a graduate of Rahway High School and while graduating from Rutgers University in 1956, received his commission to serve in the US Army. He was assigned to the Third Armored Cavalry Regiment doing border patrol on the interior German border (the Iron Curtain). Once back in the States, he studied International Business and Economics at NY University. He became the Sales Training Manager at Becton Dickinson (Rutherford, NJ), Marketing Training Manager at GE Medinet (Watertown, MA), International Sales Training Manager at McDonnell Douglas (St. Louis, MO), Medical Information Systems Consultant at Coopers and Lybrand (Philadelphia, PA), and Founder and CEO of Electronic Cottage Associates (West Chester, PA) where he designed information systems for hospital medical records departments.
Phil was a lifelong learner, educator, historian, and author. Post retirement, he became a weekly contributor to WFYL’s radio program “We the People, The Constitution Matters” for over 9 years. He created “Our Nation’s Founding, A Singular Moment In History,” a 10-part series for Tredyffrin Township’s public TV. He developed the slide show “Battle of the Brandywine – A Tragedy of Errors,” often giving personal presentations and a guided tour of the battlefield. He taught various economics, history, and government courses for multiple home school groups, Widener University’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, Immaculata University, and other community organizations. He developed “Profiles In Healing,” a course that describes historical incidents that led to healing between nations, races and religious communities. He wrote A Tale of Four Cities, a book on the early history of economic thought and its impact on human progress, and was a contributor to The Mises Wire, publishing original articles from the perspective of free market (Austrian) economics and history.
In addition to Phil’s career and post-retirement accomplishments, he was a dedicated, loving husband, father, and grandfather. He was strong in his faith and compassionate to all. He taught us to be optimistic in the face of adversity; there are no problems, only challenges. He encouraged us to find our passion and pursue it vehemently. He was first to volunteer to help friends and neighbors, and he never took anyone for granted. He will be dearly missed.
“The future is not set in stone. The future really depends on what we do now. And I think all of us want to wake up in 10, 20, 30 years and be able to tell the next generation that we stood up and did everything in our power – regardless of the outcome – to make sure that we were handing on a world to them that was humane, that was livable, that was just, and that was free.” ~ Phil Duffy
