Maura Schubert (nee Woulfe), age 89, passed peacefully on July 30, comforted by the love and prayers of family and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband John Schubert, and by her brother John and her dear friend Jim Drobile. “Aunt Maura” is survived by dozens of loving nieces and nephews, grandnieces and nephews and great grandnieces and nephews.
An English major and graduate of Chestnut Hill College, she met her husband John through his sister, Rita Rosenberger, a fellow member of the Atlantic City Chestnut Hill Alumnae Assoc.
For the past eight years she resided at the Mansion at Rosemont, where she made many new friends. Maura was born and raised in Atlantic City, where her family operated the Columbus Hotel. She reveled in telling stories about her days in Atlantic City. She was also proud of her Irish heritage and her father’s roots in Dublin. She was a loyal, loving person, who cherished her many friendships from the different chapters in her life.
She had a great devotion to St. Theresa, the Little Flower, whom she reverently portrayed in a show while in college. She embraced St. Theresa’s motto, “do small things with great love”. She had a warm smile for friends and strangers alike, and spent hours each day talking and listening, either in person or on the phone. She couldn’t pass by someone without greeting them.
She loved to sing and often told the story of when she froze up while singing on the radio in Atlantic City as a teenager. Maura was a fanatical Eagles fan who cheered out loud and didn’t want to be interrupted during games. She loved a good party, especially her birthday, and always dressed stylishly with colorful clothes and accessories to match her outfit. People from all walks of life gravitated to her because of the warmth and acceptance she extended to all. She believed passionately that every person is worthy of love and respect.
