Mary Ann Volpe

It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of our beloved matriarch, Mary Ann Volpe (nee Hager).  Mary Ann passed away on July 2, 2023, surrounded by her family, leaving behind a legacy that will forever be cherished.  Born in Philadelphia, Mary Ann was a life-long Delaware County, Pennsylvania resident growing up in Swarthmorewood, raising her children in Ridley Park, and residing between Newtown Square and Avalon, New Jersey prior to her passing.

Mary Ann was a remarkable woman who had a great Catholic devotion.  She relied on that faith during the last 16 years since her diagnosis of lung cancer.  Given a 10% chance of survival those 16 years ago, she faced her diagnosis with unimaginable courage and strength.

Mary Ann and her husband, Jim, were inseparable.  Their love for each other was obvious to anyone who knew them.  Mary Ann loved “her boys”.  The love she had for her children was immeasurable and her greatest joy was spending time with her grandchildren.  She hosted “Kids Week” at her beach home in Avalon every summer for all her grandchildren.  She went out of her way to ensure each grandchild felt special and had great memories to take away from each week as well as any time she was with them.  Family, friends, and neighbors benefitted often from Mary Ann’s extraordinary cooking skills.   She loved to cook for others and have everyone gather around her table.  Mary Ann volunteered for many years in Chester, Pennsylvania, at the Missionaries of Charity, Gift of Mary.  There she also shared her exceptional cooking skills with sisters and the women living in the homeless shelter.

Mary Ann spent her entire illustrious career at Verizon Communications.  She realized multiple promotions and won numerous awards while many making lifelong friendships throughout her 30 years at the company.

Mary Ann is predeceased by her parents, Mary Ann (nee Murphy) and Jack Hager and her brother, George Hager.

Mary Ann was the beloved wife of Jim Volpe and loving mother of her children and stepchildren, Tony Vechercofski (Mary Anne), Paul Vechercofski (Jennifer), Denise Volpe, Jim Volpe (Marissa), and Julie Turchi (Lou).  She was the devoted MomMom/Grandma to Kaylee, Ryan, Madelyn, Olivia, Bree, Shane, Gianni, Alexandra, Harper, Hunter and Capri.  She is also survived by her siblings Jack Hager, Joseph Hager (Donna) and Kate Bosch (Bill) and many nieces and nephews.

Mary Ann had an inherent ability to make people feel special whether they were family, friends, colleagues, or complete strangers.   This ability along with her contagious smile as well as the many other attributes are indicative of a life well-lived.

In honor of Mary Ann, donations can be made via a check to the Missionaries of Charity, 2714 9th Street, Chester, PA, 19013.  Please note on the check, “in honor of Mary Ann Volpe”.
