Mary Mittleman

February 25, 1932 — December 13, 2020

Mary Ann Mittleman of Lansdowne, PA, died at home on December 13, 2020, following a brave battle with glioblastoma.   She was the widow of Victor Mittleman, who preceded her in death in 1979.

She was born in Altoona, PA in 1932, the youngest of six children of Anna and Ignatius Caster.

Upon graduation from Altoona High School in 1949, Mary Ann took the brave step of leaving Altoona and moved to Philadelphia, where she enrolled in Hahnemann School of Nursing, from where she graduated in 1952 as a Registered Nurse.   She spent most of her nursing career at Hahnemann Hospital, the last several decades of which was as Supervisor of the entire nursing staff from 11:00 PM-7:00 AM, a shift that she chose and endured, so that she would be home when her children left for school and returned home.   She retired in Hahnemann in 1998, which left her ample time to enjoy her friends and family.

She loved to read and to travel and was a skilled and relentless knitter, creating masterpieces that her family continues to wear with pride.   She was especially fond of dogs and would always stop and pet any dog she encountered.

She is survived by her children Vicki Gambino (Paul) of Garnet Valley and Joseph Mittleman (Lillian) of Havertown, grandchildren Matthew Gambino (Ryan), Joseph Gambino (Rosalyn), Emily Gambino, Aaron Mittleman and Stephen Mittleman, her great-grandchildren Madelyn and Emily Gambino and one granddog, Louis.

Services and interment will be held privately.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the ASPCA National Chapter, Processing Center, P.O. Box 96929, Washington, DC 20077 would be appreciated.    www.aspca.org
