Mary Jane Thornton Gilroy

Mary Jane “Jean” Thornton Gilroy (nee Laurie), age 85, native of Glasgow, Scotland, passed away on June 16, 2026 surrounded by her family. A long time Drexel Hill resident, Jean came to the United States in 1962 and became a US Citizen 7 years later.

Jean was a woman who embraced life with spirited enthusiasm and heartfelt sincerity. A lifelong fan of sports, she was often found enthusiastically cheering on her beloved Philadelphia teams, particularly the Flyers, whose thrilling moments brought her boundless joy. Tennis matches provided another source of delight, as she appreciated the elegance and precision of the game. Beyond the excitement of athletics, Jean found solace and creativity in knitting, weaving both yarn and patience into enduring crafts that reflected her gentle nature.

Jean was the beloved wife of the late Richard Gilroy and loving mother of Mary Jane Schroeder (Bill). She is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by her parents, Robert and Rose Laurie (nee Clarke) and her siblings, Robert Laurie, James Laurie, John Laurie, Betty McGran, Rose Creaney, Agnes McLafferty, Sadie Woods, and Margaret Paxton.

Family and friends are invited to Jean’s Viewing 9:30-11:00 AM on Monday, June 22nd at St. Charles Borromeo Church, 3422 Dennison Ave, Drexel Hill, PA 19026, followed by her Funeral Mass at 11:00 AM. Interment Private.
