Marie Schrier

October 21, 1940 — January 25, 2018

Marie Patricia Schrier (nee Macklin), Age 77, of Malvern, Pennsylvania, formerly of Houston, Texas, passed away on January 25, 2018.

Marie was born Mary Patricia in Washington, D.C., on October 21, 1940 to beloved parents Mary McGinty and U.S. Navy Rear Admiral Martin Thomas Macklin, Medical Corps. She grew up with her younger sister, Margaret, and her younger brother, Gil. Marie graduated from Mary Washington College in 1963 with a degree in Sociology. She worked as a teacher and as a social worker before starting a family.

Marie was devoted to her husband Bob and their two children, Marty and Kristina. Marie and Bob could be found at every school and sporting event for their children. Because her father served in the Navy and her husband was a civil engineer, Marie had to grow accustomed to moving from one locale to another. She even spent her high school years on the island of Guam. During her forty-seven years of marriage, the family moved fourteen times. After each move, Marie would plant new seeds; her first step was always to join the local Catholic parish, where she would volunteer for every possible activity. At one parish, her volunteer efforts, along with Bob's, earned the Schrier family the honor of "Family of the Year."

Marie was fiercely proud of her 100% Irish roots and her face lit up with a beaming smile every time she heard an Irish name. One of her fondest memories was the trip she and her husband Bob took to Ireland to celebrate their thirtieth wedding anniversary-a gift made to them by their children, Marty and Kristina. On that trip, she secretly insisted to Bob that they purchase an Irish wedding card for Marty and his then girlfriend (now wife), Rosi; the two had dated only three months, but Marie was legendary for her fierce sixth sense.

An avid fan of Villanova and Notre Dame, Marie made sure the family watched every Nova basketball game and every Irish football game, fight song blaring, pom poms and game-time snacks in hand. Her joy was complete when Marty enrolled in Notre Dame and Kristina in Villanova, and subsequently married graduates of each favored school in the campus chapels.

Marie was very proud of her granddaughter, Sabrina, and her three grandsons, Lucas, Ethan, and Gabriel. She loved them dearly and enjoyed seeing them grow. In the last few years of her life, she lamented that Bob could not delight in the grandchildren at her side. Now, we trust both of them are watching and Marie's Irish eyes can smile.

Marie is survived by two children, Martin (Rosario) and Kristina Howard (Stephen), and five grandchildren, Sabrina, Lucas, Ethan, Gabriel, and the late Emma. She is also survived by her siblings, Margaret Lordi and Gilbert Macklin. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert John Schrier, in 2013.

Relatives and family are invited to her visitation Monday, January 29, 2018, 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM at The Donohue Funeral Home 366 W. Lancaster Ave, Wayne, Pennsylvania, 610-989-9600. The funeral mass will be held on Tuesday, January 30th, at 10:00 a.m. in St Norbert's Church, 50 Leopard Rd, Paoli.

A private internment for family members will follow.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Marie's name to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, 555 Croton Road, Suite 111, King of Prussia, PA 19406.
