Margaret Varzaly

July 23, 1925 — July 9, 2021

On July 9, 2021, Margaret B. Varzaly, loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away at age 95. Known to her friends as “Marge” and to her grandchildren and great grandchildren as “Grammy” or “Great Grammy”, Marge lived a long and rich life. Born in Scranton, PA on July 23, 1925, she attended St. Mary of the Assumption High School and completed one year of nursing school and courses at the University of Scranton. She married Frank Varzaly in 1948 and together they had three children.

In addition to her roles as wife and mother, Marge proudly worked in a variety of jobs, first as a long distance operator for Bell Telephone Company and later as a secretary and receptionist for the John F. Davis Company and the Action Rehabilitation Center. In 1984, she became the Secretary/Treasurer for Roaring Brook Township in Moscow, PA; her work for the township culminated in her election to the position of Supervisor of Roaring Brook Township. In this position, her work included serving as the legislative body for the township, setting policy, enacting ordinances and resolutions, and managing budgets. Marge loved learning new things. After retirement, she returned to the workplace as a telephone operator for J.C. Penny’s, a job where she could interact with interesting people and where she enthusiastically learned how to use a computer. She lived in Scranton for most of her life, but after retiring from her position at Penny’s, she moved to Brookhaven, PA, where she lived in a condominium with her cat and made many new friends.

Marge was a proud wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother as well as a loving cat owner in her later years. She was an excellent cook and will be especially remembered for her wonderful pierogi, a recipe which has been passed down to her grandchildren. Marge was a devout Roman Catholic and served as a Eucharistic Minister in multiple parishes over the years. In her free time, she enjoyed trips to the Atlantic City casinos, was a game show aficionado, and enjoyed drinking an occasional Manhattan. She was a strong and loving presence in her family’s lives and will be dearly missed by her family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband Frank, her parents William Budjack and Mary Grill Budjack, and her daughter Marylou.  She is survived by her daughter Margaret Warwick (Robert), son Paul (Janet), grandchildren Jennifer Bazeley (Joe), Devon Mongiello (Joe), Jessica Dempsey (Ryan), and Lindsay Kordhishti (Nik), and great-grandchildren Aidan O’Connell, John Dempsey, and Evan Dempsey.

Relatives and friends are invited to her viewing Wednesday, July 14, 2021 9:00-9:30 AM at Our Lady of Charity Church, 231 Upland Road, Brookhaven, PA and to her Funeral Mass at 9:30 AM.   Interment will follow in St. Catherine Cemetery, Moscow, PA.
