Lucia “Lucy” Maria McCann (née Paparella), 86, passed away peacefully, surrounded by all of her children, on May 21, 2026.
Born in Rochester, Pennsylvania, in 1939, Lucy was the daughter of the late Alex and Vincenza (Alicandro) Paparella.
Lucy was the beloved wife of the late John William McCann; loving mother of John McCann, Michael McCann (Mary), Patrick McCann, Kathleen Yackin (Steven), and Dennis McCann; and devoted Nonna to John “Jack” McCann, Hannah Maldonado, Sean McCann, Mitchell McCann, Maria McCann, Luke McCann, and Emily McCann. She was also preceded in death by her siblings, Lucio Paparella, Philip Paparella, and Angeline Paparella.
After graduating from high school, Lucy attended nursing school in Pittsburgh and began her career as a maternity nurse at Fitzgerald Mercy Hospital in Darby, Pennsylvania. Shortly afterward, she began raising her family and devoted many years to caring for her home and children as a stay-at-home mother. Later, she returned to nursing and worked at Conner-Williams Nursing Home in Ridley Park, Pennsylvania.
Lucy loved her home and could almost always be found there—cleaning, cooking, gardening, or taking on another project to improve the house she cared for so deeply. After her husband’s passing, Lucy especially enjoyed the opportunity to lovingly keep her son Pat on task. Her family was always at the center of her life.
Lucy was known for her wonderful cooking and baking, and holidays were especially meaningful. Christmas Eve was a cherished tradition, when she prepared the Italian Feast of the Seven Fishes for her family. She was also a devoted fan of the Philadelphia Phillies and rarely missed a game on television.
Lucy and her late husband spent countless days caring for their grandchildren, who could always count on warm company, full bellies, and feeling completely at home with their Nonna. She was also an accomplished gardener and, until recently, tended a backyard garden that brought her great joy and an abundant harvest.
Relatives and friends are invited to her Funeral Mass at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 30, 2026, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church. A private interment will follow.
