Lillian D. Whitman

October 7, 1923 — May 24, 2023

Lillian D. Whitman (née Nadeau), also known as “Dusty”, and “The Gamster”, of Wallingford, PA, passed away May 24th, 2023. She was predeceased by her caring parents Francis and Florida (née Vincent) Nadeua, and her brother Louis.

Lillian was the beloved wife of the late Harry R. “Bud” Whitman; the loving mother of Richard (Lynn), Marie Mangino (Nicholas), James (Alison Whyte), John (Linda), and Patricia Whitman (Sheri Newmark); the devoted grandmother of 15 and 9 great-grandchildren, so far…! She was also predeceased by her dear first great-grandchild, Sophie T. Abbott.

Born into a small French-Canadian community in Cohoes, NY, her first language was French. At age four the family relocated to Oneota, NY, and Lillian began school before she was five in order to learn English. It became clear that Lillian was remarkably bright. She was promoted each year and finished high school at 16.

Being so young, Lillian then had to wait a year to enter nursing school at St. Mary’s Hospital in upstate, NY. Upon graduation, Lillian enlisted in the Army as a registered nurse. She was commissioned as an officer and served overseas in the European theatre during WWII.

After her dedicated service and honorable discharge, Lillian was accepted into the University of Rochester Nursing Education Program in 1946. However, instead of pursuing a degree, she chose to move to Pennsylvania to be near her future husband, to marry and start a family.
