Leonard C. Dickerson

Leonard C. Dickerson, age 98 of West Chester, PA formerly of Springfield, PA passed away surrounded by his loving family on June 6, 2022.

Born in Philadelphia, PA to the late Wallace and Ethel Mae (Knopp) Dickerson.

Len is predeceased by his beloved wife Iris (Laird) Dickerson, son Laird Dickerson and sisters Irma Wray and Betty Wray.

He is survived by his loving children Keith Dickerson, Brad Dickerson (Nancy), Gary Dickerson (Lynn), daughter-in-law Debbie Dickerson and sister Ethel Veit. He is also survived by his 9 grandchildren: Thomas, Joseph, Jessica, Stephanie, Jennifer, Rachael, Shannon, Connor and KellyAnne and 10 great grandchildren.

Len was born and raised in West Philadelphia, PA and attended Overbrook High School.  Shortly after the bombing of Pearl Harbor he joined the U.S. Marine Corp. Following his service, he began working for MAB Paints. Through his manager, now Uncle Malc, he met his future wife, Iris Laird, in May of 1944, ironically on the property of J.J. Sullivan which is now Hershey’s Mill where they later lived. They married in 1945 and moved to Springfield where Len began his career in real estate. He worked with W.A. Clarke Co. and Pomeroy Real Estate (later Fielding & Company) and in 1950 he founded Dickerson Reality.

Ultimately, Len was an entrepreneur. His business adventures included his partnership to create Eddick Construction with his neighbor. This led to building and operating the Springfield Ice Skating Rink in 1962. Other ventures included the Angler Fishing Pier in Ocean City, NJ and the acquisition of Port Herman Beach in Maryland in 1975.

As a former Boy Scout, Len showed many examples of service for his community, his church, his friends and family. He was a Township commissioner, volunteer ambulance corps driver, active member of his church, and served on countless committees. He enjoyed driving throughout the states in their travel trailer, visiting internationally with his wife, watching the Phillies, boating and making memories with his family.  

Len provided his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren with countless memories of exploration and adventure. He has set an example of how to serve your community and maintain a strong work ethic. He cared deeply for his family, friends, and his community and has left a lasting impression of kindness, love, and generosity. May his legacy live on.

Relatives and friends are invited to his Visitation, Saturday, June 11, 2022 10:00 – 11:00 AM at St. Francis in the Fields Church, 689 Sugartown Road Malvern, PA 19355 followed by his Funeral Mass at 11:00 AM. Interment Arlington Cemetery, Drexel Hill, PA.
