In Loving Memory of Kieko Whitney
February 17, 1948 - February 23, 2026
Kieko Whitney, loving wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully at home.
She was born in Yokohama, Japan, to Okinawan parents, Katsujiro Kohama and Chiyo Takaesu. In 1972, she came to the United States after marrying her beloved husband, John, who was serving as a Green Beret with the 1st Special Forces Group in Okinawa.
Kieko and John first lived in Darby and Havertown before eventually settling in Newtown Square, where they made their home for many years. In the year 2000, she proudly became a citizen of the United States, embracing her new country while always honoring her Okinawan heritage.
Kieko found her greatest joy in spending time with her family, especially her cherished grandchildren. She also enjoyed playing the Japanese card game Hanafuda with her close friends, creating lasting memories through simple but meaningful moments.
Kieko is survived by her devoted husband, John; her sister, Shigeko Takaesu of Yokohama, Japan; her half-brother, Hisao Okobori of Osaka, Japan; her son, John Whitney Jr.; her daughter, Miki Pignone (Christian); and her beloved grandchildren, Aaron, Michaela, and Miya Pignone, and Akira and Lotus Whitney.
Kieko will be remembered for her warmth, strength, and unwavering love for her family. Her memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
Relatives and friends are invited to honor Kieko’s life at a Visitation on Saturday, March 28, 2026, 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at The Donohue Funeral Home, 3300 West Chester Pike, Newtown Square, PA 19073, followed by a Funeral Service commencing at 11:00 AM. Interment will be held privately.
Contributions to Disabled American Veterans, https://www.dav.org/ways-to-give/, in memory of Kieko, would be appreciated.
