Joseph Mackie, Jr.

Joseph F. “Jeff” Mackie, Jr., Ph.D., age 74, passed away surrounded by family on March 19, 2021.

Jeff is survived by Sandy (nee Hedrick), his wife of 50 years this May, of Paoli, PA; son Jeffrey and wife Stephanie (Ries); son Craig and wife Julianna (Snyder); and grandchildren Vivienne, Winston, Teddy, and Cecily.

Jeff was the son of Joseph, Sr., and Gladys (nee Craigans), who immigrated from Scotland. After moving several times during his youth, Jeff’s family settled in Dover, DE, where he graduated from Dover High School. Jeff attended Temple University, where he was a member of Phi Delta Chi fraternity and earned a BS in Pharmacy in 1969 followed by a Ph.D. in Toxicology in 1976. Jeff then moved with his family for a teaching position at the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy. In 1981, Jeff began a new career at Smith Kline & French (later GlaxoSmithKline) where he became Director of Product Training. His passion for public speaking led to a membership in the National Speakers Association. Jeff was also a member of Certified Medical Representatives (CMR) and served as Chairman of the Board from 2004-2012. Upon his retirement from GlaxoSmithKline in 2002, Jeff took on the title of Ambassador for the company and toured the country as a motivating humorist, telling audiences that “The moment you eliminate the impossible from your thinking, everything else becomes possible.”

Jeff will be remembered for his quick wit, his steadfast support for family, friends, and neighbors, and for showing his pride for his Scottish heritage by enjoying a “wee nip” of Scotch with company.
