Joseph J. “Joe” Gaffney, of Newtown Square, PA, passed peacefully surrounded by his family on August 5, 2026, at the age of 93.

Born in Philadelphia, PA, he was the son of the late William and Catherine (née Callaghan) Gaffney.

Joe’s life was deeply shaped by his dedication to hard work and community. Early in his career, he joined Plumbers Union Local 690, beginning his professional journey as a plumber before moving into the field of mechanical construction.

His sense of duty extended beyond his trade. Joe honorably served his country in the United States Navy, reflecting the commitment and integrity that would become hallmarks of his character throughout his life.

Proud of his Irish heritage, Joe embraced life with a vibrant spirit. He was an avid golfer and achieved the rare accomplishment of seven hole-in-ones, a testament to his skill and passion for the game. Those closest to him will also remember his love of singing—a joyful gift he shared with friends and family alike.

Above all else, Joe’s greatest pride was his precious wife, Peggy, and his children. He cherished them deeply, celebrating the achievements of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. The warmth and joy he found in their company were the true rewards of his life.

Joe was the beloved husband of the late Margaret J. (née McDowell) Gaffney, the loving mother of Joseph F. Gaffney (Kay), Michael T. Gaffney, Margaret J. Messa (Raymond), Thomas W. Gaffney, Robert P. Gaffney (Karen), Patricia A. Gaffney, and James P. Gaffney (Kristin). Joe was the caring and proud grandfather of 19 and the great-grandfather of 14. He is also survived by his brother, Frank Gaffney, and is predeceased by his sister, Margaret Hayes and brother, William Gaffney.
