John “Clay” Clayton Mutchler passed away peacefully on December 20, 2025 at the age of 88. He is survived by his three children John (Augusta), Kristen (John), and Amy (Rob) and his beloved grandchildren Zachariah, Noah, and Alisun. He was preceded in death by his wife of forty-nine years, Regina, his parents and siblings Timothy, Shirley, Arlene, and El-Neeta.
Clay was born in Falls City, TX on June 2, 1937, son of John and Annie Mutchler. He graduated as the valedictorian from Falls City High School class of 1955. He went on to be the first member of his family to graduate from college with a chemical engineering degree from the University of Texas at Austin in 1959. After graduation, he was hired by Dupont and spent forty-two years with the company in sales and then working as a research chemist at the Marshall Lab in Philadelphia before retiring. Clay was part of the team that developed the patented Teflon technology.
Clay was a dedicated family man. He enjoyed many hobbies over the years including an early interest in computers, saltwater aquariums, fishing, and volunteering at the Philadelphia Zoo but most of all liked to spend time with his grandchildren. Clay and Jean retired in Lewes, Delaware and his final years were spent at White Horse Village, Newtown Square to be closer to family.
In lieu of flowers the family requests contributions to the Philadelphia Zoo.
