John Charles Gartland

February 3, 1940 — May 29, 2026

The Honorable John Charles Gartland of Haverford, PA, passed away peacefully on May 29, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. Whether you knew him for five decades or just met him five minutes ago, John made no secret of what was important to him: family, faith, and Villanova basketball. He will be remembered as a man of good humor and humility who devoted his tremendous energy and optimistic spirit to the many communities he helped create and sustain.

John, the son of Charles and Helen Gartland, was born in Cleveland, OH. After the family relocated to Myrtle Beach, SC, John spent summers as a lifeguard during the day and honed his famous dance moves to Alabama’s “Shaggin’ on the Boulevard” in the beach clubs at night. He attended Mount St. Joseph High School in Baltimore, MD and went on to earn his B.S. from Villanova University in 1963, an institution that would remain at the center of his life for decades to come. He later received an M.S. in Financial Management from George Washington University in Washington, DC.

John served his country in the United States Navy, where he acquired a lifelong love of sailing and rising early in the morning. His service included four years of active duty as a Public Affairs Officer aboard the U.S.S. Saratoga and at the Pentagon, followed by nearly 25 years of reserve duty service, during which he attained the rank of Captain.

He served as the Director of Washington Affairs for Amway Corporation for over twenty years, and his distinguished career in public service spanned decades, including roles at the White House as Staff Assistant to the President, Executive Assistant to the Secretary of the Treasury, and Director of the Office of Congressional Relations at the U.S. Office of Personnel Management, among many others. He was appointed by President Ronald Reagan and later by President George H.W. Bush as Chairman of the National Commission for Employment Policy. John was deeply committed to the Republican Party, lending his talents to presidential campaigns beginning with Richard Nixon in 1968 through George W. Bush in 2004, and serving as chairman of several presidential inauguration committees. Far and away his most treasured time in public service was as an “advance man” for four different Republican presidents, including key roles in President Nixon’s tour of the Middle East and President Reagan’s visit to the United Kingdom, where his zealous commitment to protocol was remarked upon by Queen Elizabeth II herself.

John met his beloved wife, Anne Kennedy, while working on Capitol Hill. They married just a few months after their first date, and over the next 52 years together, they built a life rooted in family, faith, and service. John and Anne began their family in the Capitol Hill neighborhood before moving to Potomac, MD, where they raised six children (five daughters and one son) and were active members of Our Lady of Mercy parish. A devoted father, John was a fixture on the sidelines of his kids’ soccer, basketball, softball and lacrosse games, where his passion earned him more than one yellow card and several game ejections, notwithstanding that he was not even a coach. Notably, his passionate fandom did not wane with age, and he would likewise earn notoriety among the referees of his grandchildren’s athletic events in the years to come.

John was committed to providing a Catholic education for his children, and his disposable income was earmarked almost exclusively for tuitions at Our Lady of Mercy elementary school, the high schools of Holy Child, Stone Ridge and Gonzaga, and his alma mater Villanova University, from which all six of his children graduated. John often admonished his children that “You can go to college wherever you want, but I’m only paying for Villanova.” Although his children suspect that he was joking, none of them tested this theory.

John and Anne retired to Wayne, PA in 2005, literally buying the house next door to his eldest daughter Catherine so that they could spend more time with her and her husband Tim’s six children. For over twenty years, John and Anne attended daily Mass at Corr Hall Chapel at Villanova, developed deep and lasting friendships within the Augustinian community, and served as loyal and vocal fans of Villanova men’s and women’s basketball. As season ticket holders who also loved to travel for Big East Tournament and other away games, John and Anne cheered on the Wildcats with great enthusiasm, with John frequently offering guidance and his eyeglasses to any referees who erred by making calls against his Wildcats. They also relished their personal connection with the team and its players, including the opportunity for John to assist coaches and players with navigating federal agency bureaucracy and, in the case of one foreign-born player, teaching him how to drive using the Gartland minivan. John embodied the Villanova motto of “Once a Wildcat, Always a Wildcat,” and one of his life’s highlights came in 2025 when he and his six children were blessed to meet fellow Villanova alumnus Pope Leo XIV at St. Peter’s Basilica.

In a lifetime of professional and personal achievement, no title or honorarium was more important to him than that of husband and caregiver for his wife Anne. Following her diagnosis with Alzheimer’s in 2012, and continuing every day until her passing in 2020, John faithfully and unfailingly attended to Anne's every need and ensured that she continued to participate in the joys of their life together: daily mass, basketball games, and enjoying visits from their children and grandchildren at the Quadrangle, the senior community to which they moved in 2018 and where they made so many wonderful friends.

John was predeceased by his wife Anne, with whom he prayed daily to be reunited “whenever she has had enough of a break from me and tells God she’s ready for me to join her.” He is survived by his six children, Catherine Lowry (Tim) of Wayne, PA, Mary Clare Claud (John) of Washington, DC, Annie Burke (Darryl) of Brisbane, Australia, Charles Gartland (Adriana) of Bethesda, MD, Brigid Morrissey of Wayne, PA, and Theresa Gartland of Los Angeles, CA, and his 16 grandchildren: Elizabeth, Jake, Kevin, Kate, Page, Brigid, Merritt, Amelia, Jack, Clare, Harry, Charlie, Owen, Eadlin, Shane, and Dylan. He is also survived by his brothers Michael Gartland of Anchorage, AK and Patrick Gartland of Marietta, GA, and was predeceased by his sister Ann Mutschler of Bushnell, FL.

A funeral Mass and viewing will be held in the coming weeks at St. Thomas of Villanova Church. Details forthcoming.
