John Armand Garate, age 90, of Audubon, PA, passed away on November 8, 2025. Born in New Orleans, LA, he was the son of the late Angel and Catherine Garate (nee Wiedemann).
John’s remarkable journey began in a world evolving through innovation and change, a realm he would not only witness but help shape through his distinguished career in engineering. A graduate of the U.S. Maritime Academy, John embarked on a path that would lead him into the intricate workings of jet engine space programs. His professional endeavors were marked by an unwavering commitment to advancing renewable energy solutions, as he tirelessly championed the merits of wind and solar power over traditional nuclear alternatives. His foresight and dedication reflected a vision for a sustainable future, leaving an indelible mark in the field of engineering.
John's contributions extended far beyond his professional accomplishments. A proud veteran of the United States Navy, he carried the values of service and dedication throughout his life. After retiring, he embraced the role of educator, imparting his knowledge through a computer tutoring business at Shannondell, where he found joy in guiding others in their learning journeys. His passion for knowledge also led him to volunteer at local libraries, sharing his insights generously with those seeking enlightenment.
Deeply religious, John was an active member of the Catholic community, serving as a lector at St. Monica, St. Katharine of Siena, and St. Teresa of Avila Church, where his faith was a source of strength and purpose. His devotion to the church reflected his desire to contribute meaningfully to the spiritual well-being of others.
Beyond his professional and community endeavors, John cherished the simple pleasures of life. He had a particular fondness for bird carving, a hobby that allowed him to express his creativity and appreciation of nature. Known for his commitment to health and wellness, he often frequented the gym, maintaining an active lifestyle well into his later years. Above all, John loved spending time with his friends and family. The bonds he nurtured with loved ones were a testament to his understanding of life’s true rewards.
John was the beloved husband of the late Barbara Garate (nee Rabbitt) and Teresa Ehart Garate (nee Ansley); loving father of Katherine Triest (Robert), Christine Marie Garate, John Armand Garate Jr. (Mary), and Patricia Ann Garate; adoring grandfather of Katherine Marie Spring (Jennifer), Tracey Anne Howard (Christopher), Michelle Christine Livingston, Zalika Christine Issiakou, Ibramim Mahamadou Issiakou, Michael Patrick Garate (Alice), and Margaret Estelle Garate; caring great-grandfather of Kayden Michael Spring, Liam Michael Howard, Henry John Howard, and Anna Gabriela Garate. Predeceased by his siblings, Miguel and Bonita Solis Garate, and his grandchildren, Barbara Marianna Issiakou and William Charles Garate (Kathleen).
Family and friends are invited to John's Viewing 8:45-9:45 AM on Thursday, November 13, 2025 at St. Teresa of Avila Church, 1260 S. Trooper Rd, Audubon, PA 19403, followed by his Funeral Mass at 10:00 AM. Interment Private.
