Johan M. Hoff

Johan Mark Hoff, 57, of Thornton, Pennsylvania, died unexpectedly in his home during the early hours of Sunday, August 16, 2026, following a cardiac event. His wife and both of his sons were with him.

Johan was born January 22, 1969, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, the oldest of three children of John Hans Hoff and Karin Marie (Noren) Hoff. He spent his summers on his grandparents' farm in Minot, North Dakota, and as a teenager he explored the North Dakota countryside on his bicycle, regularly riding hundreds of miles.

He graduated from South High School in Minneapolis in 1987 and enlisted in the United States Army that September. Trained as a Russian linguist, he served five years, with assignments in Monterey, California; San Angelo, Texas; and Boston, Massachusetts. He deployed to Germany and Kuwait during the First Gulf War. He received the Army Commendation Medal for exceptional leadership and for technical and tactical expertise, and was discharged as a corporal in December 1992.

It was at the Defense Language Institute in Monterey that he met Samantha Lynn Manges. Six months later, on November 20, 1989, they were married in Thurmont, Maryland, and they renewed their vows in Cancun, Mexico, in June 2005. At the time of his passing, Johan and Samantha had been married nearly 37 years.

Johan earned a degree in aerospace engineering from the University of Minnesota in 2000 and spent most of his career in airworthiness, working for Boeing. He began his career on the Space Shuttle program in Houston, where he was responsible for the dynamic analysis of solid rocket booster separation and served on the ascent investigation that followed the loss of Columbia. In 2007, he moved the family to Pennsylvania, where his work ranged from ballistic armor for military vehicles to composite structures for the 787 and the certification of Chinook helicopters for three national air forces. He closed his career working on a modified 737 built as an early warning aircraft for Britain's Royal Air Force.

Johan was a loving, caring husband and friend to Samantha. Together, they raised two children, lived in multiple countries, and supported each other through life's many challenges. Samantha was his best friend and love of his life. Despite his many accomplishments, he was most proud of his successes as a husband and as a father. In their marriage, he was an unfailingly kind and supportive man who always made her feel seen and heard. He was slow to anger and quick to forgive, and he always placed a priority on relationship before justice or self-righteousness. He was a calm presence who filled their home and their relationship with quiet strength and serenity.

Johan was a wise and encouraging father to his two sons, Andrew and James. He was a paragon of strength, thoughtfulness, intentionality, patience, and perseverance, a legacy both of his sons strive to honor. He was a constant and present figure in their lives. He intentionally cultivated and nurtured deep relationships with each of his sons. Whether over morning coffee, a charcoal grill, a drink, a project in the garage, or a long drive, he engaged with each of them deeply and earnestly. They leaned on him for his perspective on major life decisions, relationships, values, and other things large and small. He was a brilliant, well-rounded man and role model to his two sons.

Johan was a man with wide-ranging interests and passions. His favorite activities included watching his sons play baseball and spending time outdoors hiking, camping, or canoeing. He loved walks on the beach with his wife and spending time in and by the ocean. His hobbies included birdwatching, collecting Ferrari Matchbox cars, watching Formula One racing, curating a digital collection of over 500 movies, reading, and enjoying German beer while grilling.

In the words of Maya Angelou, "People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel." Johan has left a lasting impression upon the people in his life. He will be remembered for his warm, peaceful presence. He will be remembered for his humor and contagious laugh. He will be remembered as someone who made others feel cared for and seen. Words can't adequately describe the man that he was, but he will live on in the fond memories of those who knew him.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John Hoff and Karin Noren, and by his sister, Kristen Hoff.

He is survived by his wife, Samantha; their sons, Andrew Johan Hoff and James Patrick Hoff; his mother-in-law, Bonnie Phagan; his brother, Erick Hoff; his nieces and nephews, Cecilia Sparr, Temperance Hoff, Elisabeth Hoff, Noah Hoff, Donavan Hoff, and Kyle Ainsle; and three devoted cats.

Visitation will be held from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 12, 2026, at Calvary Chapel Delaware County, 500 Brandywine Drive, Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania, with a service to follow from 11:00 a.m. to noon. All are welcome.
