Joanne G. Burke (nee Gray) passed away peacefully on November 18, 2025, at the age of 81. Born in Philadelphia, PA she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Louise Gray (nee Alliod).
Joanne attended Transfiguration of Our Lord Grade School and St. Leonard’s Academy of the Holy Child High School in Philadelphia. She went on to Misericordia Nursing School and began a remarkable career as a psychiatric nurse in the city of Philadelphia, where her deep commitment to the care of others quickly took root. She embodied compassion, service, and quiet strength—values she carried throughout her life.
Even after stepping away from her professional career, Joanne’s heart never stopped working. She devoted herself fully to her family, nurturing and raising four children with boundless love, wisdom, and patience. At the same time, she poured her energy into her community, offering her time, talent, and generous spirit wherever it was needed. Her impact was felt widely, especially through her active involvement at St. Andrew’s Parish and at Monsignor Bonner and Archbishop Prendergast High Schools in Drexel Hill.
She was a cherished part of community life in Drexel Hill, dedicating herself to numerous organizations, including H.O.P.E. at St. Andrew’s and Nana’s Attic, a domestic abuse outreach project in Delaware County. Her gentle spirit and caring nature enriched every environment she touched—whether she was volunteering, offering a listening ear, or simply being present and willing to give anything to anyone at any time.
Joanne’s recent move to Riddle Village Retirement Community brought her joy and fellowship. Here, she eagerly engaged in social activities, bonding with fellow residents over cards, bingo, and friendly matches in the bocce ball league. Always community-minded, Joanne's laughter and enthusiasm were infectious, creating a welcoming atmosphere for those around her.
Joanne held a special fondness for the summers spent in Crystal Beach, Maryland, memories woven into the fabric of her family's story. As life unfolded, one of her greatest joys emerged in the form of her grandchildren, whom she adored and cherished with all her heart. Their growth and accomplishments offered her profound delight, marking the circle of life as she nurtured the next generation with the same love she had for her own children.
Joanne was the beloved wife of James J. “Jim” Burke and loving mother of Brian J. Burke (Sally), Patrick Burke (Allyson), Lauren Stutzman (Jeremy), and Matthew J. Burke (Stephanie). She is also survived by 11 adoring grandchildren who will miss her dearly. Joanne was predeceased by her sister Mary Louise Gallagher.
