Joann Utz

Joann Utz (nee Romano) passed away on April 15, 2026, in West Chester, PA, at the age of 80, surrounded by her loving family.

She was born on September 27, 1945, in Philadelphia, PA, to the late Salvatore and Rose Romano. She grew up in South Philadelphia loving Sunday family dinners and the New Year’s Day tradition of the Mummer’s Parade.

Joann met the love of her life, her husband Mitchell, in 1965, they married in 1968, and she spent the next 60 years with him. Over the decades, they watched their family grow, had a wonderful group of friends, saw different parts of the world, and experienced a beautiful life together.

For several decades, Joann held various roles for Aramark in the West Chester School District until she retired in 2024. She was not just known for her hard work, but for the kindness to everyone she served.

Her faith was an important part of her life. As a devoted member of St. Maximilian Kolbe Church, she found strength in her beliefs. She served as a Eucharistic Minister and was a member of their Women's Club, where she formed friendships and shared many happy memories.

She was a passionate Eagles fan and season ticket holder, cheering them on through every season with unwavering loyalty.

Throughout the year, nothing brought her more joy than the holidays, especially Christmas. She loved decorating her home, filling it with warmth, lights, and the spirit of the season, creating a place that felt like home. She loved hosting an annual Christmas party for family and friends and gathering with her family for those special holiday dinners.

Above all, Joann cherished spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. Her traditional Sunday Italian gravy and meatballs always made her home inviting and full of love. Those moments meant everything to her.

She leaves behind a family that will miss her dearly and will carry forward her traditions, her strength, and her spirit.

Joann is survived by her husband, Mitchell Utz; her sons, Michael Utz (Carolynn) and Christopher Utz (Renae); and her grandchildren, Madison, Kaitlyn (Wesley Nicholson, fiancée), Ryan, Andrew, and Sophia; as well as her sister-in-law, Theresa “Terri” Romano and brother/sister in-law, Jerry and Joy Utz; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her siblings Joseph Romano, Rosario Romano, and Josephine Romano.
