Jane Lois Usner (née Hillman), of Pottstown, PA, formerly of Lansdowne, PA, passed away on April 25, 2026, at the age of 97.
Born in Philadelphia, she was the daughter of the late Francis M. and Nellie Alberta (née Dornberger) Hillman. Jane grew up in Philadelphia and attended school there, graduating from West Philadelphia High School. She met her future husband, Sam Usner, at a church picnic, and it was love at first sight. The couple was married in November 1948. Two years later, they moved to Lansdowne, had three children and joined the First Presbyterian Church, where they were longtime members.
Possessing a lovely alto voice, Jane was often heard singing a tune and was a member of the church choir. Throughout her life, she took up needlepointing, bowling, playing the organ, gardening, and country line dancing, and couldn’t wait every year for summer sunbathing. She was employed at numerous jobs over the years, including at J.C. Penney and The Franklin Mint.
In her later years, she and her husband, Sam, ran a food cupboard in Upper Darby receiving a community service award for their efforts. She also enjoyed watching birds at her backyard bird feeder and spending time with family and friends.
Jane was the beloved wife of the late Warren Samuel Usner; the loving mother of David W. Usner, Cynthia J. McGroarty, and Deborah J. Miller; the devoted grandmother of Meredith McGroarty, Timothy Miller, and Gretchen Miller; and the caring great-grandmother of Edward Rubenstein and Jacob Miller. She was also the sister of Richard Hillman and the late Phillip Hillman, and aunt to many nieces and nephews.
Family and friends are invited to honor Jane at her services beginning with a viewing on Friday, May 1, 2026, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at The Donohue Funeral Home, 3300 West Chester Pike, Newtown Square, PA, followed by a time of personal reflections commencing at 11:00 AM. Interment thereafter at Arlington Cemetery, Drexel Hill, PA.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Jane’s memory to the National Audubon Society, https://www.audubon.org/ways-to-give, would be appreciated.
