Remembering Jim Brennan

James (Jim) Patrick Brennan, a lover of education, all things Italian, wine, his family, and his church, died on August 5, while vacationing in Maine,

His death came shortly after he spoke on Zoom calls with long-time friends and family wishing him a happy 78th birthday. Although Jim persevered through a muscular condition, he was up and about that day; his passing was relatively sudden—a shock to those who had spoken with him earlier.

Dubbed “Jimmyboy” by his parents, Frances and Patrick, he grew up in Overbrook Park and attended St. Calistus, where he delivered newspapers to the neighborhood and visited family in Johnstown, PA.

Later, he studied Classics at St. Joseph’s Prep and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a degree in Civil Engineering. He went on to earn a master’s degree in Transportation from Northwestern University.

After a brief stint in Boston, where he met his future wife, Emily, he returned to his hometown and received an MBA from Penn’s Wharton School. A lifelong learner, Mr. Brennan continued to pursue his interests after returning to Philadelphia, which included studying Italian for many years, learning to play the piano as an adult, taking cooking classes, and judging work by engineering students at Penn.

Following the family tradition of railroad employment, and with a unique civil engineering and finance background, Jim worked over twenty years for Conrail in various capacities. He ultimately reached the position of Regional Manager of Industrial Market & Economic Development, based in Philadelphia. He was also instrumental in the CORE Services Group.

Jim was a great fan of cooking shows. He would enjoy spending countless hours watching and learning from his favorite chefs. His daughter Laura says, “He was a great cook, utilizing as many pots and pans as possible, and slightly charring everything he grilled.” Dishes with copious amounts of garlic and hot peppers were his favorites. Jim’s love of food and drink extended his friendship circles. Starting in Boston with a fledgling club with other 20-somethings “evaluating and tasting” wine, continuing until his final days, enjoying elaborate meals with his closest friends.

Jim was known for his wonderful laid-back demeanor, quirky sense of humor and being a good sport. He was a devoted Philadelphia sports fan, stock market aficionado, fresh pasta roller, and language maven. While attending the Philadelphia Orchestra and Opera he may have fallen asleep once or twice.

Despite his physical limitations, he was able to vacation often, spending most winters in Puerto Rico and summers in Emily’s native Maine. Jim always looked forward to the week that they would spend “down the shore” in Sea Isle City, NJ. He also enjoyed an active role in his home at the Philadelphian condominiums, as a member of the Engineering, Green, and Annual Holiday Fund Committees.

Mr. Brennan met each day with a smile and often woke to his favorite Latin tunes. He also firmly supported community service: volunteering for school events, making casseroles for the homeless, administering the sacraments as a eucharistic minister and lector at Presentation BVM Church. Even after moving to Philadelphia, he continued to attend Mass there each Sunday, motivated by his deep faith.

Loved and admired by his two younger brothers Kevin, Patrick, their families, schoolmates, work colleagues, as well as neighbors old and new, Jim will be sorely missed. Although he suffered physical set-backs, his resilience and determination were remarkable. Jim would be the first to say that he could not have done it without the support of his loving family. Emily was his rock, Helene his personal cheerleader; Laura, her husband Nam would offer love from afar, by Facetiming daily with his two grandchildren Kieran and Penelope. His legacy will continue to shine in the hearts and minds of those who loved him and knew him well. Relatives and friends are invited to his Service on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, 11 AM.
