James Henry Norton, Jr. (“Jim”), M.D. passed away peacefully on June 8, 2026 at the age of 90.
Born in Salem, Massachusetts, Jim was the son of the late James and Helen Norton. He graduated from St. John’s Preparatory School in Danvers, MA, and went on to the University of Notre Dame, graduating in 1956. Motivated by his passion for science and intellectual curiosity, he pursued a career in medicine at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, where he ultimately found his calling in pathology. His training took him to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital before he dedicated himself to work in the community setting at Monmouth Medical Center and Point Pleasant Hospital in NJ, and at Saint Joseph’s Hospital in Lowell, MA.
Jim had a deep enthusiasm for sports, remaining a lifelong fan of Fighting Irish Notre Dame football and the Boston Celtics. He also took great joy in exploring new experiences through food and travel, especially savoring diverse cuisines at ethnic restaurants and always enjoying a good glass of wine. He built a rich family life in Rumson, NJ, where summers were spent at the Surfrider Beach Club in Sea Bright, and later in Concord, MA, where he embraced weekend drives to admire Vermont’s fall foliage and cherished summer trips to Ogunquit and Kennebunkport—never passing up a classic lobster roll. Above all, Jim treasured time with his grandchildren, taking a genuine interest in their lives and encouraging their curiosity, learning, and educational pursuits with pride and affection.
Jim was the beloved husband of his late wife, Julia Ann, proud father of Kathleen Marie Hamill (Joseph) of Radnor, PA and Julia Ann Norton (Eric Newman) of Downingtown PA. He was the devoted and caring grandfather of Kerry McGuiness Hamill, Kristin Elizabeth Hamill, Ryan James Hamill, James Patrick Newman, Caitlin Anne Newman, and Alexandra Elizabeth Newman.
Relatives and friends are invited to a Memorial Service at Donohue Funeral Home, 366 West Lancaster Avenue, in Wayne, PA on Friday, June 12th at 12:00pm.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, https://Alzheimer's Association /get-involved-now/donate, in honor of Jim’s late wife, Julia Ann Norton.
