James "Jim" Black

d. April 18, 2026

James "Jim" Black, a man committed to his faith and family, passed away peacefully on April 18, 2026. He was 91 years old.

Born to Irish immigrant parents from County Donegal, Jim began his journey in West Philadelphia and was a proud graduate of St. Thomas More High School’s Class of 1952. He spent his career working at the Philadelphia Electric Company, retiring in 1994 after 42 years of service. He also served in the U.S. Army from 1954 to 1956, including a year in Japan. After retirement, Jim dedicated his time to volunteering at Delaware County Memorial Hospital and McCall Field Golf Course.

Jim was truly dedicated to his Catholic faith, as evidenced by his daily attendance at Mass at St. Laurence Church for many years. This served as a strong foundation for raising his family and for the many friendships he made over the years.

Jim was truly adored by the many he held dear — most notably his beloved wife Mary G. (nee Bangs), who predeceased him, and their children: Jim (Kathy), Bob (Linda), Mary Grace Salomone (Mike), John, and Kathleen Sweeney (Bill). Their family was further enriched by 15 cherished grandchildren, a source of immense joy and pride for Jim throughout his years. Though he mourned the loss of his grandson, Bobby Black, Jr., his love remained constant through times of grief. He was also preceded in death by his parents, James J. Sr. and Margaret T. (nee Coyle) Black, as well as his brother, Fr. Alvin Black, OFM, whose own commitment to faith no doubt deeply inspired Jim.

As an avid golfer, Jim found pleasure and camaraderie on the greens of McCall Golf Course, where he spent many happy hours. He also enjoyed weekly outings such as country dancing and eating out at local diners, treasuring these moments of simple joys and spending time with friends.

Jim will be remembered by all who knew him as someone who lived a life rich with integrity, fidelity, and hard work. Family and friends will carry the memory of his gentle spirit and unwavering faith in their hearts.

Relatives and friends are invited to Jim’s viewing on Saturday, May 2, 2026, from 9:30 to 11 AM, followed by his funeral mass at 11:00 AM at St. Laurence Church, 8245 West Chester Pike, Upper Darby, PA. Interment at SS Peter and Paul Cemetery, Springfield, PA.
