James Stilwell Ernst

Born to H. Nelson and Blanche (nee Stilwell) Ernst in Harrisburg, PA in 1942. Jim enjoyed being surrounded by family and friends throughout his active life.

He graduated from Millersville University in 1964, then earned his Master’s degree.  Jim spent his life teaching history and coaching football, track, basketball and wrestling at Marple Newtown School District.

Outside of school, Jim loved the outdoors. From skiing in the Rocky Mountains to biking the board walk to waterskiing on the Susquehanna and kayaking in the ocean, Jim was always enjoying the outdoors.  Visiting his many cousins remained important throughout his life.

Jim’s love of history and nature led him to visit many national landmarks, parks and museums. He was always looking for new perspectives; from a vista overlooking local geography or opening political discussions or reading global newspapers, Jim was dedicated to being a lifelong learner.

A love of Penn State Football brought a group of friends together that became family.

James was the beloved husband of Carol (nee Wisniewski) Ernst, with whom he shared 56 years of marriage; loving father of Peter Ernst and Krista Ernst; caring grandfather of Isabel, Charlotte, and the late Kennedy Rose Ernst; dear brother of Chet Ernst (Norma). He is survived by many cousins.

Relatives and friends are invited to join us for a celebration of life Jim’s life.
