James P. “Jim” Bannon Sr., age 73, of Upper Darby, PA, passed away on April 22, 2026. Born in Darby, PA, he was the son of Joseph and Sara Bannon (nee Connor).
Jim was an employee of Upper Darby Township for his entire adult life and retired after forty-two years of service in the Sanitation and then Sewer Departments. His work ethic was admirable and it was not uncommon for him to put in a full day’s work at the Township before heading off to this second job at the Knights of Columbus, where he served as the Bar Manager for the last forty years. If he wasn't working one of his multiple jobs, you could find Jim up the “Fields” coaching HPKAA baseball where he helped raise a whole generation of neighborhood kids. On weekends, he loved golfing and joking around with his closest and oldest friends down the “Crick”. After retiring from the Township, Jim began volunteering at Saint Laurence Church, where he was attended mass daily.
Jim's life was much more than his working career; he was, in the truest sense, everybody’s best friend. Blessed with true kindness and generosity and a warm sense of humor, Jim made everyone feel welcome and easily made friends. He built a life filled with love and steadfast loyalty. His marriage of 54 years stood as a pillar of love and companionship, a bond that was both rare and beautiful in its endurance. To his beloved grandchildren, he was the cherished “Pop,” their constant source of warmth and joy.
Jim was the beloved husband of Margaret Bannon (nee Byrnes); loving father of James Bannon Jr. (Michelle) and Megan Schneider (Paul); adoring grandfather of Paul Schneider Jr. “PJ” and Max; caring brother of Joseph Bannon (Diane), Sara Corbett, Paul Bannon (Maria), and the late William Bannon (Debbie), and Uncle Jim to many nieces and nephews.
Family and friends are invited to Jim’s Viewing 8:30-11:30 AM on Thursday, May 7th at The Donohue Funeral Home, 8401 West Chester Pike, Upper Darby, PA 19082, followed by his Funeral Mass at 12:00 PM at St. Laurence Church, 8245 West Chester Pike, Upper Darby, PA 19082. Interment Private.
In lieu of flowers, contributions to the Knights of Columbus Trinity Council #3132, 2 N. Carol Blvd, Upper Darby, PA 19082.
