Emblem

With deep love and sorrow, we share the passing of Ira Newton Kerber III (Kerby), a lifelong public servant, educator, and devoted family man, who passed away on June 6th, 2025 at the age of 72.

Kerby’s legacy was one of service, strength, and quiet generosity. He joined the Broomall Fire Company in February 1969, beginning a lifetime of dedication to public safety. Over the years, he held numerous leadership roles including Engineer, Lieutenant, Captain, Assistant Chief, and later served on the Board of Directors and as President. After decades of service, he earned Life Member status in recognition of his outstanding commitment.

In 1982, Kerby became a certified instructor with the Pennsylvania State Fire Academy, sharing his knowledge with the next generation of firefighters. In 1992, he began working with the Delaware County Board of Fire and Life Safety, and in 1997 he transitioned into a full-time role as Deputy Director of the Emergency Services Training Center, where he educated and mentored thousands of emergency responders. Over a few decades he led the evolution of the training center from very humble beginnings to the facility it is today, preparing first responders to protect the citizens of Delaware County.

His professional influence reached across many fire service organizations, including the PA State Fire Academy, International Society of Fire Service Instructors, Delaware County Firemen’s Association, NFPA, IFSTA, and others. Kerby also supported fire service research and innovation, contributing to advancements that continue to benefit firefighters across the country and beyond.

In addition to his work in training and leadership, Kerby also served his community as a Constable in Delaware County and most recently as Deputy Fire Marshal for Marple Township, roles in which he continued his commitment to public safety and mentorship.

Kerby was admired not only for his depth of knowledge and steady leadership, but for his humility, warmth, and unwavering dedication to those around him. He embodied the spirit of public service in every role he took on.

Outside of his professional life, Kerby was a lifelong lover of books and history, and above all, a devoted father and grandfather. He deeply cherished time with his family and found joy in watching his grandchildren grow.

He is survived by his children: Stephen Ira Newton Kerber (Erin Snyder Kerber) and Lauren Kerber Frost (Sean Frost). He is preceded in death by his beloved daughter, Amy Debra Kerber, and his longtime partner, Diane Hino. He will be deeply missed by his grandchildren: Owen Newton Kerber, Cameron Kerber, Amaryllis Ira Frost, and Leander Frost.

Kerby is also survived by his siblings: Richard Kerber, Katy Wiercinski (Tom), Elaine Parks (Jeff), and Jayne Hadden (Charlie), along with many nieces, nephews, extended family, and many friends and colleagues whose lives were enriched by his presence.

His memory lives on in the countless individuals he mentored, the community he protected, and the family he loved. His absence will be felt deeply, but his legacy of service and compassion will endure for generations.
