Media, PA

Henry J. Whalen, Jr., age 90, of Drexel Hill, PA, passed away on May 14, 2025. Born in Drexel Hill, PA, he was the son of the late Anna (nee Sherry) and Henry J. Whalen, Sr.

After graduating from West Catholic High and Villanova University, Hank devoted a significant portion of his career to the insurance industry, where he rose to be an executive at New York Life for more than 30 years. His professional life was marked by diligence, integrity, and a genuine commitment to those he served, leaving an indelible impact on his colleagues and clients alike.

In addition to his successful career, Hank proudly served in the Army Reserves, contributing to the values of duty and service that would mark his character throughout his life. Those who knew him appreciated his steadfast nature, often finding solace in his wisdom and support.

Hank’s retirement allowed him ample opportunity to indulge in his passions. A true aficionado of life's pleasures, he found joy in the sun-drenched shores of Port St. Lucie, FL, and the sandy beaches of Ocean City, NJ. Whether savoring a delightful Manhattan or enjoying his time playing the organ, he embraced every moment with a spirited enthusiasm that drew others in, creating a warm and welcoming presence wherever he went. As a member of the Llanerch Country Club, he found solace in the companionship of fellow enthusiasts, often joining them for a round of golf or an evening filled with music—the passion that resonated deeply within him. His passion for golf continued well into his later years.

Hank was the beloved husband of the late Ann Whalen (nee Brown); loving father of Cynthia Ann “Cindy” Shay (Bob), Bonnie Jean Monastra (George, Jr.), Allison Ann Savage(Steve); adoring grandfather of Monica, Bobby, Lauren, Gregory, Kyle, Brett, and Megan; caring great-grandfather of Ronan, Marshall, Lochlan, Mary, Victoria, Christian, Lily, Sylvia, Simon, Grant and Luke; devoted brother of Ann Marie Devine, Mary McDonnell, James P. Whalen, William F. Whalen, and the late Dr. Thomas J. Whalen.

Family and friends are invited to Hank’s Viewing 9:30-10:50 AM on Tuesday, May 20, 2025 at The Donohue Funeral Home, 8401 West Chester Pike, Upper Darby, PA 19082, followed by his Funeral Service at 11:00 AM. Entombment at Arlington Cemetery, Drexel Hill, PA.
