George Hess, Jr.

March 28, 1924 — January 18, 2019

George W. Hess, Jr., 94, of West Chester, PA passed away peacefully with his devoted wife by his side, on January 18, 2019 in Paoli, PA.

George was born March 28, 1924 in Pittsburgh, PA.

As a young boy he lived in Bronxville, NY, Washington, DC & moved to Miami, FL where he lived for fifty years.

George served honorably for two years in the Army Air Corp during WWII in the South Pacific.

As a high-speed ground radio operator he learned morse code and, he volunteered to fly with Aussie pilots for a wild ride dropping supplies to US troops behind Japanese lines.



He earned his Accounting degree from University of Miami under the GI bill, passed his CPA in 1962 & earned his MBA in 1980 also from University of Miami.

George worked as a Controller at University of Miami. In 1982 he accepted a position as Associate Treasurer & Controller at Rider College.

He worked there fifteen years & was awarded the title of Vice President for Finance.

On March 10, 1990, George happily married Ann Johnston at St. David's Episcopal Church.

They honeymooned in Europe & visited Ann's parents in Bieber, Germany.

George & Ann enjoyed a joyful married life for twenty-nine years.

In 1996, George retired after fifty years of working.

He & Ann enjoyed driving trips throughout the US & Canada, including one trip lasting two months.

They traveled to US Open Golf Tournaments & mountain & beach vacations with their family.

Once Ann retired they also traveled to Europe, including a visit to George's ancestral home in Soignies, Belgium.

During retirement he also volunteered his financial talents by serving as financial officer for their housing association, Deerfield Knoll.

George enjoyed Genealogy, doing research the old fashioned way, pre-Ancestry.com

He explored family roots dating back to the Hess family who arrived at Penn's Landing in 1738. (Making him a member of the Sons of the American Revolution).

As a gift to his daughters he compiled two thick binders of historical documents, maps & photos & the story of his beloved mother's life & the Hess family.

George loved playing golf.

He took meticulous care of his clubs & enjoyed the friendships made with his golfing buddies.

He & Ann spent many happy weekend afternoons together watching golf tournaments on tv.

In his last year, George spent time donating his childhood toys.

His childhood castle is now part of ongoing presentations at the Brooklyn Toy Museum.

For George family was everything.

He was a devoted son, husband, father & proud grandfather of three granddaughters & three grandsons.

Most recently he found joy in his two young great-grandsons.

Samuel George, now six-years-old is his namesake.



He is survived by his children, Pamela D. Page (Van), Elizabeth W. Caggiano (Lou), and Rene A. Lopez (John); his grandchildren, Alexandra Strawn (Anthony), Louis Caggiano (Jessica), Matthew Caggiano, Charlie Page, Adriene Lopez, and Danielle Lopez; his great-grandchildren, Samuel George Strawn and William Strawn; predeceased by his daughter, Lisa Walton.

Relatives and friends are invited to his Visitation 10:30-11:00 AM Saturday, January 26, 2019 at St. David's Episcopal Church (cemetery side), 765 S. Valley Forge Road, Wayne, PA 19087 followed by his Funeral Service 11:00 AM. Int. St. David's Episcopal Church Cemetery.
