Frederick W. Dunhour, III, 70, of Avalon, New Jersey, passed away peacefully at home on July 8, 2025, after facing his brain cancer diagnosis with unmatched grace and strength.
Born in Camden, New Jersey, on March 8, 1955, Fred was the beloved son of the late Frederick and Lorraine Dunhour. He grew up in Audubon and graduated from Audubon High School before earning his finance degree from Villanova University in 1977. It was at Villanova that he met the love of his life, Janice, on their first date over 50 years ago, who would become his wife of 46 wonderful years. Fred and Janice shared many joyful years together, creating lasting memories with dear friends and family in Haddonfield and Avalon, the beloved communities they called home.
Fred was the longtime President of the Dunhour Insurance Agency, where he built a successful business grounded in integrity, trust, and a deep sense of community. His warmth, wit, and natural charisma made him unforgettable to all who met him. Fred lived with an undeniable “gusto for life.”
A gifted athlete and lifelong sportsman, Fred excelled at golf, surfing, skiing, and paddleboarding. His Villanova friends affectionately dubbed him “The Game Man”—a name that reflected both his competitive nature and his easygoing spirit. He was a well-known and respected face at Tavistock and Stone Harbor Golf Clubs and had played—and mastered—some of the finest golf courses in the world.
Fred was a passionate Philadelphia sports fan and a proud Eagles season ticket holder. He was often seen at games in his cherished #60 Chuck Bednarik jersey, singing along to Eagles fight songs after a win. He also faithfully followed Villanova basketball and took special pride in their championship seasons.
Beyond sports, Fred was a music savant—his rock music collection was vast and his knowledge unrivaled. He was equally passionate about wine, especially bold Napa Valley cabernets. He relished visits to wine country. An evening with Fred and Janice and a favorite bottle, was often followed by Fred, using his gifted voice, to serenade his guests with an Eagles or Stones tune.
Fred is survived by his loving wife Janice; his daughter Erica Harrison and her husband Jeff; his son Davis; and his treasured granddaughters, Amelia and Zara. He also leaves behind his sister, Diann Sheaffer, and her husband Richard, as well as extended family and dear friends who will miss him deeply.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, at 11:30 a.m. at Maris Stella Roman Catholic Church, 5012 Dune Drive, Avalon, NJ 08202. The family will receive visitors at the church that morning from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.
