Eugene "Gene" O'Brien

April 16, 1959 — March 18, 2021

Eugene “Gene” “Obie” O’Brien, aged 61, passed away suddenly on March 18, 2021. Gene is survived by his loving wife of 34 years, Theresa (nee George), cherished son Conor and his constant companion, dog Sam. Also survived by Sister-in-law, Marie Green McKeon (brother, Jack McKeon sadly passed away May 12, 2021), sister Susan Callaghan, brother-in-law Joe Callaghan and  Sisters-in-law, Anita Mello, Joyce Frazier, Judy Ricciardi, Patricia (Jim) Sannino, Janice George and Ellen George, as well as many loving nieces and nephews Gene was extremely close to. Predeceased by father John Rodgers O’Brien, mother Joan Winner Cardarelli, step-father Carmen Cardarelli, beloved mother-in-law Margaret McEwan George, father-in-law Dean George and brother-in-law Dean George.

Gene started his career at the Philadelphia Stock Exchange in surveillance. He then went on as a Foreign Currency Broker with Dunraven and also ran Bloom Staloff for many years. Gene then commuted to New York for five years as a Foreign Currency Broker but realized he was missing too much of Conor’s life with his long hours. He left New York in September 2000, a year before 9/11. Gene was extremely saddened by all the friends he lost that horrific day. After returning to Philadelphia, Gene and his good friend Steve Floirendo “Flounder” (2/16/1968 – 10/8/2019) started Husky Trading. Gene was a very successful and innovative broker and trader. For many years Gene was crucial in providing our Wounded Veterans with free business skills needed to re-enter the job market. In the past 15 years Gene was involved with real estate and very recently started trading online again.

Gene loved sitting in his yard, listening to Frank Sinatra and smoking a cigar, with Sam nearby. But he was in his glory when his family, particularly his brother Jack and nephews Mike and Charlie and friends, especially Dave, Billy, Casey and Baker visited. He loved baseball, specifically the Phillies and football, watching finance and business channels and John Wayne movies.  He enjoyed playing golf when he was able and when younger, played softball, baseball and semi pro football for many years.

We are extremely saddened by Gene’s sudden death and miss him greatly. However, Gene would definitely want us to remember him for his love, smile, laughter, generosity and sense of humor.

Memorial contributions can be made to your local no-kill animal shelters in Gene’s name.
