Ernest Messersmith

August 14, 1931 — March 8, 2018

Ernest John (E.J.) Messersmith, Jr., Architect of Radnor, PA, passed away on March 8, 2018 at the age of 86. He was the beloved partner of Liz Thompson, loving father of Adrienne (Brian) and John (Fumi) and the devoted grandfather of Melissa (Tyler), Jeremy, Josef, Noa and Anj.

E.J. maintained an architectural practice in Philadelphia for some 50 years, during which time he served as Vice President on the Board of the Philadelphia Chapter of the American Institute of Architects. From 2003 through 2009, he served as Vice President on the Board of SARA (Society of American Registered Architects) and for several years co-chaired SARA's Design Awards Program. During the bicentennial year, as President of the Pennsylvania Society of Architects, E.J. chaired the annual PSA statewide convention in Philadelphia.

A few of E.J.'s significant projects were Veterans Stadium Club, Concessions and Video Display; Villanova Athletic Facility Basketball Arena; The Department of Agricultural Research and The Department of Land and Water Research, Penn State University.

A 1954 graduate of Georgia Tech, E.J. earned degrees in both Science and Architecture. Upon graduation, he served as an officer in the U.S. Air Force. After his service, E.J. re-entered Georgia Tech, earning his Master's Degree in Architecture.

One of E.J.'s greatest joys was mentoring young architects.

Soon after joining the AIA, he was assigned the task of originating a program that would be of long-term service to the Institute. The program provided a systematic recordation of the professional activities of architectural interns. This enabled young architects to attest to work done during their period of training, prior to achieving their professional license.

As an outgrowth of the Recordation Program, E.J. and a colleague began a subsidiary outreach program of the Philadelphia Chapter of the AIA, providing task force teams of interns to serve approximately 100 identifiable Philadelphia neighborhoods in the areas of Planning and Design, at no cost to those who were unable to pay.

An avid golfer, E.J. enjoyed the camaraderie and challenges of the links. He will be dearly missed by all those who knew him.

Services will be private. In lieu of flowers, contributions in E.J.'s name may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
