Elizabeth (Betty) Hausner Roberts died peacefully, surrounded by the love of her family and friends, on July 8, 2026, in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania. She greeted life with curiosity and was a lifelong learner and teacher. She exemplified faith, service, inclusion and respect for others. Most importantly, her life was centered around her family - her husband John of 58 years, their four daughters, four sons in laws and 12 grandchildren, that she adored. She saw the potential in everyone, always putting others first. Words cannot express how much she will be missed.
Betty was born in Queens, New York. She grew up with her 4 siblings on Long Island, NY, attended Port Jefferson High School and graduated from the Teachers College of the State University of New York at Cortland in 1960.
Betty began her teaching career in Westport, Connecticut, where she shared a home with a group of her sorority sisters and others who went on to become beloved lifelong friends. Betty and John met in 1964. An early date involved a walk in the woods around the reservoir in North Greenwich and a gallant John carrying Betty across a muddy puddle so as not to mar Betty’s penny loafers! John and Betty married in 1965 and started their family in Greenwich, Connecticut.
Betty devoted the first chapter of their married life to raising their four daughters along with volunteering in schools and in the community. Betty returned full-time to the classroom and joined the faculty of Greenwich Country Day School. Betty had a deep joy and appreciation of reading and writing, and passed on that enthusiasm to countless children in her 32 years in the classroom.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Anna and Frank Hausner, and by her husband, John Wallace Roberts. Betty’s love and commitment to family lives on in her four siblings, Anna (Nancy), Frank, Mary, Tony and their families, four daughters and son in laws, and her grandchildren; Dawn and Dennis Macray (Julia, Sam, and Ezra), Deirdre and Keith Gonzales (Grace, Luke, and Claire), Amy and Neil McGaraghan (Jack, Leo, and Lucy), and Sarah and Dave Black (Owen, Eliza, and Graham).
Betty will be forever remembered for her love of Martha’s Vineyard and collecting sea glass, long walks on the beach and hikes in the Adirondacks, entertaining friends and family around a beautifully set table with flowers and candles, keeping in touch with friends near and far, and most profoundly for her love, delight, and pride in her twelve grandchildren, who affectionately called her B! Once a service to honor and celebrate Betty’s life has been planned, details will be posted here.
