Eleanor Wertel, a woman who brought joy to all she met, passed away Sunday, September 17, 2017 after a long bout with Parkinson's Disease, at her home in Wayne, PA.
She is survived by her husband of 49 years, Ronald Wertel, her brother Nicholas Flocco, sister-in-law Claire Flocco, nephews Nicholas, Edward, and Christian Flocco and their children. She was predeceased by her mother Rita (nee DiLullo) and her father Anthony Flocco.
Raised in South Philadelphia, she was married in the same church as Rocky (Rocky II.) She and Ron honeymooned in Canada, skiing in the Laurentians. She lived in Swarthmore 36 years and Wayne for 13 years.
She began her career at the University of Pennsylvania Hospital and attended classes at the University of Pennsylvania before moving to the Naval Air Engineering Center. From there she went on to the Marine Corps Supply Activity and Defense Personal Support Center, advancing to accountable officer for perishable foods, serving all military branches and traveling to locations including New Orleans and Germany.
An avid gardener and reluctant flower arranger, she became president of the Swarthmore Garden Club. She enjoyed traveling with Ron all over the world including Eastern Africa, Europe, Western Canada, Iceland, Mexico, and much of the United States of America including Hawaii and Alaska
Athletically inclined she enjoyed swimming and skiing. She also played shortstop on a Naval Base softball team and played singles and doubles for the Swarthmore Tennis Team.
Eleanor was a loving and compassionate person, and was caregiver to her mother and father-in-law. She moved in and assisted her best friend and her niece when each were blessed with twins. She was a volunteer committee chairman for A Better Chance Swarthmore.
Relatives and friends are invited to her visitation September 21, 2017 at 10:00 AM at St. Katharine of Siena Church, Lancaster and Aberdeen Avenues, Wayne, PA followed by her Funeral Mass at 11:00 AM.
