Eleanor C. DiDonato (née Burke)
Eleanor C. DiDonato (née Burke), of West Chester, PA, beloved wife of the late Harry P. DiDonato, who touched countless lives through her love, generosity, faith and unwavering devotion to her family, passed away peacefully on July 2, 2026.
Born on April 19, 1940, in Upper Darby, Pennsylvania, she was the daughter of the late Richard Burke and Eleanor Burke Mapes. In 1962, she married the love of her life, Harry P. DiDonato. Together they built a partnership dedicated to faith, family, and commitment which remained the foundation of her 86 years.
In 1970, they moved to Chester County, where they raised their six children, Harry J. DiDonato (Cristy), Brian R. DiDonato (Pamela), Karen P. DiDonato (Chris), Christine N. DiDonato, Elizabeth L. Andersen (Donald), and the late Stephen B. DiDonato, whose loss she carried with enduring grace and faith. Together, they created a life filled with warmth, laughter and lasting memories. To know Eleanor was to bear witness to the enduring love and adoration she held for Harry through her final days. She truly treasured the life and family they built together. Her greatest joy came not from her own accomplishments but from helping those she held dear reach their greatest achievements. Eleanor leaves behind a legacy measured by the lives she shaped through her love, devotion and giving of herself. She taught by example that family always comes first, that faith provides strength in every season, and that the smallest acts of kindness often leave the deepest impression.
As the oldest daughter in her family, Eleanor learned responsibility and sacrifice at an early age. At just sixteen years old, she began working to help support her family and assist in raising her younger sisters. Those early experiences shaped the compassionate, hardworking, and generous woman she would become, placing the needs of others before her own throughout her life.
Nothing brought Eleanor greater happiness than her grandchildren, Matthew, Katherine, Alexandra, Zachery, Erin, Brynne, Robert, Patrick, Luke, Mary, James and Daniel, each of whom brought her immeasurable joy. Whether celebrating birthdays, holidays, graduations, family dinners, or simply spending quiet time together, she treasured every moment with each one of them.
Eleanor's Catholic faith was the foundation upon which she built her life. It guided her decisions, strengthened her during life's hardships, and inspired her compassion for others. Eleanor dedicated many years of her professional life to Cabrini College and later to Daylesford Abbey, where she formed lasting friendships and genuinely enjoyed her work. Those who knew her remember her warm smile, gentle spirit, and sincere interest in the lives of everyone she met.
While she traveled to many places, none held her heart like Cape May, New Jersey. As a girl, Eleanor summered in Cape May with her grandmother, held summer jobs as a teenager, fell in love with Harry while he was a guard on the Wildwood Beach Patrol and acquired her affection for salt air, long beach days and sandy peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. Eleanor’s most perfect days included morning walks on the Promenade with her daughters, perfectly ripened Jersey tomatoes plucked from the garden she carefully planted each Mother’s Day, Sunday mass at Our Lady Star of the Sea and a bike ride with Harry to The Lobster House to procure fish for that evening’s family dinner.
She is also survived by her loving sisters, Dolores, Maureen, and Lorraine, along with many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends whose lives were enriched by knowing her.
Those fortunate enough to know Eleanor will remember her welcoming smile, her generous heart, her love of family gatherings, her joy on the dance floor, and her love of baking (which recipes she guarded so carefully). Her laughter, warm smile, and enthusiasm made every day just a little brighter.
Though her family mourns her passing, they find comfort knowing she is reunited with her beloved husband, Harry, and their son, Stephen. Her love will continue to guide her family for generations, and the traditions, values, and memories she created will remain her enduring legacy.
"Well done, good and faithful servant."
Relatives and friends are invited to her visitation on Friday, July 10, from 9:15 AM – 10:30 AM and Funeral Mass at 10:30 AM at Sts. Philip and James Church, 723 E. Lincoln Hwy. Exton, PA 19341.
Interment will be private at Saints Peter & Paul Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations in Eleanor’s memory to Daylesford Abbey. Gifts to Daylesford Abbey may be made at https://daylesford.org/support-daylesford-abbey or mailed to Daylesford Abbey 220 S Valley Rd, Paoli, PA 19301.
