Eleanor T. Andrews, age 79, of Drexel Hill, PA, passed away on December 6, 2024. Born in Arlington, VA, she was the daughter of the late James W. and Irene E. Anderson.
A graduate of Upper Darby High School, Eleanor took medical secretarial classes at Peirce Junior College, social justice, poetry, and other classes at the University of Pennsylvania, and later received her Bachelors’ Degree in Sociology from Temple University. She worked as a medical secretary at the University of Pennsylvania Hospital, for the Kelly Services temporary agency, and ultimately as the Executive Assistant to the Administrator of St. Mary Hospital in Philadelphia. Her hobbies were reading, history, and writing letters. She was an avid traveler, having traveled widely in the United States, Alaska, Europe, and Scandinavia.
Eleanor was deeply rooted in her community, passionately engaged with the heritage of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and proudly carried forward the values and traditions that ignite a sense of shared history. She was a member of the Upper Darby Business and Professional Women’s Club, serving as its President from 1981-1982, the Delaware County Historic Society, and the Pennsylvania Historical Society. Her enduring dedication as a member of the Drexel Hill United Methodist Church exemplified her spirit of service inspiring those around her with her generosity and kindness. She volunteered for many years for the American Swedish Historical Museum.
She is preceded in death by her beloved husband David L. Andrews, her parents, and brother Douglas Anderson. She is survived by several cousins and her brother’s family.
Relatives and friends are invited to Eleanor’s Visitation 9:00-10:00 AM on Saturday, February 1, 2025, followed by her Memorial Service 10:00 AM at The Donohue Funeral Home, 366 West Lancaster Ave, Wayne, PA 19087. Interment at Valley Forge Memorial Gardens, King of Prussia, PA.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charities that Eleanor supported including the American Diabetes Association, the American Heart Association, Defenders of Wildlife, the Sierra Club, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, the Arthritis Foundation, and Paralyzed Veterans of America.
