Dr. Emile Riggs Mohler III, Director of Vascular Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania Health System, died peacefully at his home on October 13, 2017, at the age of 56 from ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease).
Dr. Mohler was the beloved husband of Bonnie MacManus Mohler and devoted father of Riggs, Greg, and John Mohler. He was the dearly loved son of Dr. Emile R. Mohler, Jr. of Ellicott City, Maryland, and Peggy Mohler Strahan, Ph.D. of Lutherville, Maryland, and brother of Tom and his wife Barbara, Bill and his wife Ann, and Bob and his wife Chez Mohler. He was Professor of Medicine at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. He taught and mentored medical students for more than 20 years. A physician specializing in cardiology and vascular medicine, Dr. Mohler practiced at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.
He was a member of the Cardiovascular Institute, the Institute for Human Gene Therapy, and the Institute for Medicine and Engineering at the Perelman School of Medicine. Dr. Mohler was a member of several academic and scientific committees including the American Board of Internal Medicine Cardiovascular Committee, and he was founder of the vascular council for the American Society of Echocardiography. He was a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology, the Society for Vascular Medicine, the American Heart Association, the College of Physicians of Philadelphia, and the American College of Physicians. He lectured extensively, nationally and internationally, about a wide range of topics related to his clinical and research interests, including diagnosis and management of peripheral artery disease, vascular imaging, and the amelioration of cardiovascular risk factors. The current focus of his research team is the investigation of cytomic biomarkers and novel treatments for patients with peripheral artery disease.
Dr. Mohler published over 250 manuscripts and edited seven books. He was an ad hoc peer reviewer for many prestigious medical journals; he edited the vascular medicine section of UpToDate, and he served on the editorial boards for Endovascular Today, Thrombosis Research, and Vascular Medicine. He was awarded multiple government and industry grants and held a patent for a noninvasive device that measures limb oxygenation and blood flow. Cytovas, a Penn Upstart biotechnical company was co-founded by Dr. Mohler.
He attended Boston College and then received his M.D. from Georgetown University School of Medicine. He completed his internship and residency in internal medicine at Georgetown University Medical Center. He then finished his cardiovascular fellowship at Indiana University Medical Center.
Dr. Mohler was named Master Clinician of the Year by the Society of Vascular Medicine in June 2017. Despite his many challenges with ALS, he summed up his outlook on his journey in a recent autobiographical blog when he said: "Life is Beautiful."
